Ephesus Bronze Depicting Members of 2d Triumvirate
« on: January 07, 2020, 08:18:42 pm »
I'm quite excited with my latest acquisition, a bronze coin from Ephesus depicting Octavian, Marc Antony, and Lepidus" https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-159558.

40-39 BC

Ephesus, AE 1/2 unit 19mm

Jugate bare heads of the Second Triumvirate members, right

ΑΡΧΙΕΡΕΥΣ ΓΡΑΜ ΓΛΑΥΚΩΝ ΕΦΕ ΕΥΘΥΚΡΑΤΗΣ; facing cult statue of Artemis (with supports)

BMC 193

The coin reverse is too rough to precisely identify, but at 5.0 grams, this coin best matches that particular variant of BMC examples per RPC online, 193 being the heaviest series with an average weight of 4.9 grams.

Cheers!

An iconic type.  I've wanted one for a long time.  Congrats!

I would NOT assume any attribution based on weight. I have several
of these at or above your weight, from several RPC numbers.

Instead, try to work out a few letters, and determine the possibilities
by process of elimination. There are, after all, only five known options.

In fact, I can pretty clearly see enough letters to determine that it is
RPC 2572A, ΑΡΧΙΕΡΕΥΣ ΓΡΑΜ ΓΛΑΥΚΩΝ ΕΦΕ ΠΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΣ.

Sometimes it is worth making that little extra effort, and seeing what
can come of it. Nice coin!

Thank you! My eyes aren't that good, nor my knowledge of the type.

Hi Blind,

Congratulations!

Like Jay, I have also been trying to acquire one of those for many years.

Little bit of advertising... We have a couple fantastic coins of Ephesos right now, for the collector with a big budget...
