GABA portrait of the day!
« on: November 24, 2019, 01:11:31 am »
Clearly someone at the mint had a bad day a couple of thousand years ago. I can just see young Marcus Mixup being called into the mint master's office- “A really great portrait of the new emperor Marcus, pity YOU SPELLED HIS NAME WRONG!”

GALBA, (A.D. 68-69), AE as, Rome mint, issued A.D. August-September 68, Rome mint, (10.40 g), obv. laureate head of Galba to right, around SER GA BA (sic) IMP CAES AVG, rev. S C, Vesta seated left on throne, holding patera and palladium, VESTA below, (cf.S.2138, cf.RIC 306, C.310).

BMC 149, online image below, seems to be from the same obv. die with omitted L.

Wow.  I hope the engraver just got a slap on the wrist.  Great portrait!

Sorry friends for being so long to reply, been a bit hectic around my end of the planet.

Thanks curtis for the image from BMC 149, seems to be a die match for sure.

And thanks very much for the comments Joe, okidoki and mix_val. Always a great pleasure to share your interest with others who are so knowledgeable.

Best regards,

Steve
