A rare dating combination for Domitian
« on: November 10, 2019, 09:14:09 am »
I have been looking for a Domitian denarius with the IMP XV acclamation for a couple of years. I stumbled upon one yesterday and I am very happy to add it to my collection.

The coin is much darker than in the photo, but this was the only way to show the detail. Note that Domitian has sideburns and a beard on this coin! RIC lists this coin as R2 which seems accurate as this is a tough one to find.

Andrew, congrats on acquiring such nice rarity.

The funny thing is that I own the other three coins of that issue and I'm missing just this one!

Since IMP XV is rare in either known combination, with TR P VII as in RIC or with TR P VIII as shown on Forvm by Tacrolimus and David A., I'd say it deserves to be called not just a rare dating combination, but an outright rare date. Apparently Domitian only held that title for a short time, because news of his next acclamation, IMP XVI, arrived almost immediately.

Thanks you Curtis. Yes, I should have said rare date instead. Here is another with a rare date-it is IMP XVI.

Congrats Andrew on acquiring a neat rarity.

Now all you need is a IMP XV with TR P VIII!
