ID for Matched Copper Disks, please
« on: September 25, 2019, 04:05:17 pm »
Ave!

Copper alloy; 38mm/19.2gm

A pair of these arrived the other day and both are pretty much an exact match as per size and weight.
I was told that they were ground-found in a small Hallstatt Culture settlement near the southern bank of the River Drava.

As seen in the photo, the disk(s) were cast in three parts; the disk, the dome and the pin. All three were then combined with an iron backing.

I've never seen anything like them. HELP!

Best regards,

Kevin

Hi,

First reaction is a pyxis lid.

Regards,

Mauseus

They could also be Hallstatt era decorations for any of dozens of things - the Hallstatters loved to decorate.

The reverse appears to have a rivet with a thin square iron-washer.  Not sure what that is for.

The few pixie lids I have seen in person have not had that.

Is it a sign it was fastened to something??

Ave Shawn,

The square iron-washer on both disks is flush against the back
and was used to affix the three separate copper ally pieces intone whole piece.

There is no other indication of a fastener of any sort.  The fellow who found them
thought they may have been necklace adornments as seen in the photo.
Same shape but without the crimping.

Best,

Kevin
