Interesting, though difficult to follow because your two links to other
aurei don't
work for me.
Commodus'
Fortuna Manens
type also occurs on a dated As, with
rev. legendFORT MANENT
P M TR P XIIII
COS V P P S C.
Cohen 162 (
Paris) =
RIC 534 and
BMC p. 321. Not in
CoinArchives, but I am sure the date TR P XIIII is correct. This is one of four
types that are undated on
aurei,
denarii, and
sestertii, but dated TR P XIIII on
asses only; the other three are
PACI AETER, PIET
SENAT, and
VICT FELI. Probably a New Year's issue of
asses for 1 Jan. 189, so prepared at the end of 188, c. Nov.-Dec.
Basically, since it occurs with date TR P XIIII on
asses, the
Fortuna Manens
type was later than the TR P XIII
Aequitas and the
FOR RED TR P XIII
types that were struck with the same
obv. die on
aurei. It often happened that an
aureus obv. die was used for two or more sequential issues. It's hard to assess your arguments from die state without
good enlargements or plaster casts of the coins.
