Hello everyone,

I was able to buy an original Cavino strike of a Hadrian sestertius which is very rare:

Some after casts are impressive but this is a masterpiece!  Congratulations.

That is the best Cavino Paduan I have ever seen, I sure wish I owned it! Well done kc!

I've always admired the finest Paduans because although they were meant to deceive buyers centuries ago, they actually are works of Late Renaissance skill and beauty. Hadrian was a handsome individual, which in this Paduan is combined with the artists clear mastery of miniature portraiture to create a superb image that has both grace and dignity. Even the reverse is a masterpiece of simplicity and balance.

I do have a later cast Paduan in my collection. Also skillfully rendered, the poor artist however only had the portly profile of  Vitellius to work with. As the old saying goes “You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear”.

Best regards,

Steve
