My First Coin! An Urbs Roma Constantine Siscia RIC 240!

Salvete omnes!

Got my coin in the post today, really thrilled! Mindblowing as an average joe, you can actually hold a piece of the Roman past for yourself!

I always thought numismatics must be a wallet-breaking hobby to collect coins I thought would've been in museums. It really blew me away at the huge selection normal people were able to access!

Being my first coin, I had no idea which emperor to get so I decided to get one with the profile of Roma herself! From there I thought I'd likely be getting something Republican, but then I saw the Urbs Roma nummus. When the Capitoline Wolf statue was completely debunked as being a complete Medieval creation, I thought that meant the figure of the lupa with two babies underneath must've been a medieval concept as well. It was jaw-dropping to see it on an actual Roman era coin! Thankfully, the nummus was affordable enough I didn't have to take out a mortgage to get it, haha. How did I do guys?

Thanks for the welcome everyone, cheers! Really cool to see such a big community for such an breathtaking hobby!

I have a question to ask actually, from something I just saw now. Now that I have a clear image of the coin here, I do notice something I didn't with my tiny magnifier.

So this is the original product image I got my coin off of compared to a current image. There seems to be some discolouration on the profile portrait's neck and cheek now that doesn't seem to be there on the original image. Is this something that could've developed in the meantime between then? It looks like someone gave poor Roma a bruise, sacrilege!

Has anyone seen something like these raised black spots before? I tried searching and only came up with something called 'carbon spots' but that seemed to be only in reference of discussion to US coins. Is there some way to clean them from the coin?

It's just a product of different lighting.  Please don't clean the coin.  It's perfect as it is and will not be improved.  Enjoy it for what it is...a 1700 year old survivor.

Very nice.
Now you are in a world of trouble.  You won't be able to stop with just one.

I recommend picking either an emperor, or a type of coin and collect those.

You can read about the occasion for this type here:

http://augustuscoins.com/ed/CON/Founding.html

The occasion was the founding of Constantinople, but the city of Rome was included in the issue. The VRBS ROMA type is the second coin down.
