Marcus Antonius denarius
« on: June 03, 2019, 04:42:22 am »
Hello. Here is a denarius that I find suspicious because of some soft details and this strange place on the edge. Does it look fake or just worn authentic coin ?

Certainly looks like an authentic Cr 545/2. Perhaps a bit of tooling of the inscription on obverse, which is remarkably complete given the overall wear.   A bit hard to tell from the photos.  It is not a common type, usually pretty worn.

I am not convinced it is authentic.  I am not condemning it, but I am not confident it is authentic from the photos.

That spot on the rim looks filed to me.

On a bigger screen, the spot does look a bit filed, but the striations appear to continue past that spot as well, more like brushed or scrubbed harshly, and perhaps some enhancement/tooling of the inscription.  Can't be certain.  Most examples of this type show wear encroaching inward from the inscription to Antony's head.  The wear/pitting on the head seem a bit difficult to recreate with casting.

I would need bigger photos to have a worthwhile opinion.  I cannot see what is going on around the mouth and eye, for one thing.

Having examined other obvious fake coins sold by this seller I made a conclusion that it is fake too.
What should a buyer do in this situation ? The seller insists on payment.

Perhaps there should be a new board rule about "asking for a friend".
Friends who collect coins or who are thinking about collecting coins should simply be invited to join the board.  On the board, these friends can read and learn about coins directly.
The friends can also read the rules about screening purchases and read the various ways board members become frustrated reading posts that incrementally reveal that the first post was not completely forthcoming.
A "no friends" rule would really save everyone a lot of time!  And tne great thing is that our friends will make more friends...
