I was extremely lucky at a couple of
auctions this week. I managed to hang on and
pick up two
rare Lycian's from the reign of
Gordian III. The first, an apparently unpublished
reverse type from
Lycia, Phaselis, I don't have either of the coins in hand yet, so these are the seller's photos.
1)
Lycia, Phaselis
AE31; 23.05 g; 1h
Obverse: AY K
MAR ANT
GORDIANOC CE; Laureate, draped, and
cuirassed bust right.
Reverse: PhACH-LEITWN;
Athena standing facing,
head left, dropping ballot ball (ψῆφος) into
urn and holding
palm frond; grounded
shield to right.
Ref: Unpublished.
Notes: All the coins for
Gordian at Phaelis share the same
obverse die, and this coin is no exception.
von Aulock Lycia, lists 6
reverse types, three of which are Galley
types, this is a 7th and would logically come after von Auluck
Lycia, 262-264, series.
