Aegis on LRB?
« on: March 19, 2019, 10:26:45 am »
I treated myself on a rarer Arelate coin:
:dot:FL CONSTANTIVS NOB C laureate draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind, with a possible aegis seen on the breast. The issue without the dot in front of the text is in RIC nr 276. Ferrando lists all possible variants and this one as nr 1038 being pretty rare. The only two examples of this coin are in his own collection, bu he doesn't mention the aegis.

Your comments are more than welcome!

I may be wrong, but I think the aegis was an option for the imperial cloak, you had to choose one or the other. Since your coin definitely has the cloak ("draped"), it should not also have the aegis. An interesting variant nonetheless, and a beautiful specimen!

An odd detail on the reverse: the extra stone division at the very left of the fourth row of stones counting from the bottom.

You're too modest, really!
I stand corrected here, but I still wonder what the engraver meant when het engraved the bust.
Yes, it is a splendid little coin purchased from one of my favorite UK dealers.
