Balkan/Lydian? AE Bearded Herakles
« on: March 16, 2019, 01:57:17 pm »
So, I've been struggling to identify this coin properly for a long time now. I'd greatly appreciate any help that others can offer.

It's a brass toned AE coin, 18 mm in diameter, 4.85 grams in weight. The obverse shows the bearded head of Herakles right inside a single line border. The reverse has four lines of Greek writing within a wreath, all inside a single dotted border. The inscription is not easily legible, but what I can make out is this:

...[:Greek_Pi:] :Greek_Iota:
...[ :Greek_Mu: or  :Greek_Nu:]  :Greek_Omicron:
... :Greek_Nu:
...[ :Greek_Nu:]

I can't see anything but the inscription within the wreath, so I don't think there is a club or something like that hiding in the obscured part.

I've scoured Moushmov for an attribution that fits, but I can't find anything. The same goes for all the online resources I've checked.

In wildwinds there is a better picture: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/lydia/maeonia/t.html   (under Lindgren III 484)
and it is also mentioned in RPC online, but without pictures: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/4/2912/

Fantastic! Thank you so much for your help. I'm now wondering how I missed it, as I did go through all of Wildwinds' Lydia databases searching for "Herakles", "bearded", and "wreath". Maybe my attention just flagged at the wrong moment.

And that ANS specimen actually looks it might be a die match...for both sides.
