Just catalogued this interesting hybrid denarius of Elagabalus and Julia Soaemais.  RIC and RSC list a similar hybrid but with different obverse legend and bust type.  Condition is not the best but it is legible.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-154351

Elagabalus
AR Denarius

Obv: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right.
Rev: VENVS CAELESTIS, Venus standing half-left holding apple and sceptre. star in right field.
18 mm, 2.51 gms

RSC 286 variant (obverse legend and bust type), RIC 175 variant (same).

Brilliant gallery!  All nicely organized. Are you focused on Roman Provincials
I always wanted the reverse with the stone of Emesa. Is that here, somewhere?

Beatyls are interesting.

I have a New Style with filleted Beatyl!

Have we an expert on beatyls?/ beatyls on coins?

Brilliant gallery!  All nicely organized...

Nice coin, but I especially agree with the above statement. Please remember this next month when we run the Gallery of the Year poll.

And while I am not a Beatyl expert I do have all their albums on vinyl.

Thanks, Anaximander.  I concentrate on provincials of Elagabalus but I do have a gallery of Elagabalus silver imperial coins and one with a few AE imperial coins.  My best stone of Emesa is actually in my silver gallery: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-146595  I also have 2 in my Judaea gallery from Aelia Capitolina, here's the best: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-156016

Just catalogued this new acquisition from Tyre.  I think it is now my favorite coin in my entire collection.  The patina is stunning (much more so in hand) and there's just enough dirt left to really make the highlights pophttps://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-158520

The auction catalog mentions there are no examples on CoinArchives--I do not have the pro subscription so cannot confirm that.  Similar examples are found  but not illustrated in Rouvier and Imhoof-Blumer MG, although neither one of these mentions the galley upon which Victory is standing.

Thank you for the nominations for Gallery of the Year.  I am honored to be included in such fine company as the other nominees.  My Gallery is a constantly evolving work-in-progress as I still have several hundred coins not yet entered and it seems every time I review a section in the gallery I find an error or two in coins already entered.

I just today entered an interesting coin of Ephesus I believe is unpublished.  It is in none of the standard references including Karwiese, Ephesus (volume 5 on provincials).  If you want an exercise in frustration try looking for a coin in Karwiese!  It is the hardest to use reference that I own.

Here's the link:

Thanks again,
Charles M.

Congrats on your nomination. I’m sure it was a long road to get there.

As to the below...

Charles M.

I never heard of Karwiese, despite my penchant for Roman coins and references thereto. Clearly it is a function of our different objectives, me with my silver imperials and you with your deep (very deep) dive into an emperor and wherever it takes you. I had to laugh when trying to make sense of the legend in the coin you referenced. It’s beastly!  Α-ΥΤ Κ Μ ΑΥΡ ΑΝ-ΤΩΝƐΙΝΟС and Ɛ[ΦƐС]ΙΩΝ ·Δ· ΝƐ-ΩΚΟΡΩ →Ν. Just wow!

Cheers~

Yes, those are nice big additions. Literally. Most weigh in at 15gm+ and 30mm+.  You need to split those up among your pockets, or you’ll tilt to one side

Your main reference is Varbanov. Do you have the books?  I’ve never been able to get my hands on that set, not in English, anyways.

Yes I have the Varbanov Greek Imperial Coins and the new Varbanov 2 volume set, Philoppopolis.  Mr. Varbanov himself sells both sets of books on ebay Buy-It-Now at a significant discount (but still fairly expensive).  Username:  varbanovbooks .

Thanks a million denarii, Charles M.  At last, I've ordered the Varbanov Greek Imperials reference.

Even knowing the book names and vendor, it wasn't easy to find the store or books on the platform. I ultimately had to google it, and voila, the missing link!  ;)

It will take up to seven weeks to deliver, because I'm cheap and won't pay for faster shipping (slow shipping is FREE).
I'm waiting on a reference from Italy, and it's been six weeks and still no book, so I'm not surprised that shipment from Bulgaria is seven weeks.

It was Varbanov or Sear, and I'm guessing Varbanov is more current and more comprehensive.
The Forum's Numiswiki entry for Varbanov is excellent.
