Constans SBCV 1014 or 1025
« on: December 28, 2018, 07:22:11 am »
May I wish a Happy New Year to all.
I have this Constans II follis which is, I believe, either SBCV 1014 or SBCV 1025. Is there any way of telling which it is? Thanks in advance.

Uaually 1014 doesn't have an exergual line below the M. There seem to be remnants of a  :Greek_Theta_2: below. I think it is Sear 1025 (Constantinople Mint, 9th Indiction).

Thank you for that. I'd assumed the squiggle in the exergue to be an epsilon, but rereading the Sear 1025 entry, it is, or is meant to be, a  :Greek_Theta_2: You say Constantinople, but in Sear it is classed under the Thessaloniki mint. Would the  :Greek_Theta_2: be an indication of that?

Sear is assuming Thessaloniki but adds a questionmark in brackets. I believe that there is strong evidence as of now, that the  :Greek_Theta_2: is denoting the indiction, because I remember having seen at least one specimen with an I (10th indiction) instead. Unfortunately I can't find a photo. Thus, I am sure that Sear 1022 -1025 belong to Constantinople as previously placed in MIB. However, Hahn believes that the  :Greek_Theta_2: is a signature for a special Constantinopolitanian emission.
