Aegina stater reverses -- a question
« on: December 21, 2018, 07:56:12 pm »
It has been years since I have looked for information about Aegina staters and I have forgotten what little I once knew.  If there a convenient chart of the various types of incuses on the reverse of Aegina staters and the names associated with them?  I think I used to know where such a chart was to be found, but I cannot remember now.

Possibly you are thinking of ...
The Coinage of Aegina by Samuel Milbank ANS NNM 24 (1924)
ANS Digital Library Link http://numismatics.org/digitallibrary/ark:/53695/nnan38166
Download as PDF available via EXPORT link on the page.
Scroll to bottom of page for plates - classification of styles by period.

On earliest dating (but no chart) refer Dating the Earliest Coins of Athens, Corinth and Aegina per Kroll and Waggoner  American Journal of Archaeology, Vol. 88, No. 3 (Jul., 1984), pp. 325-340.

All historical inquiry is contingent and provisional, and our own prejudices will in due course come under scrutiny by our successors.

Thank you indeed!  That is it--and I just could not remember the citation!

A more recent article is Hélène Nicolet-Pierre, Shpresa Gjongecaj, "Le monnayage d'argent d'Égine et le trésor de Hollm (Albanie)", Bulletin de
correspondance hellénique. Volume 119, livraison 1, 1995. pp. 283-338:
http://www.persee.fr/web/revues/home/prescript/article/bch_0007-4217_1995_num_119_1_1649

On page 287 there is a detailed classification of the reverses of Aegina staters.
