Gordian/Lydia, Mastaura/Hermes, Bull
« on: December 15, 2018, 09:36:54 pm »
Back in March of this year I was out bid for two other, one rare and unpublished, coins from Lydia, Mastaura under the reign of Gordian III. I won one, a Bull reverse. Recently I managed to win two, a Hermes (outbid in the March auction) and another bull.

AE21; 4.24 g; 11h
Obverse: ΑΥΤ Κ - ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ; Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right., seen from rear.
Reverse: ΜΑϹΤΑΥΡ-ƐΙΤΩΝ; Hermes standing left, holding purse and caduceus.
Ref: vii.1' target='_blank'>RPC VII.1 437/1-2.

2018.335.003; Lydia, Mastaura; Gordian III

AE21; 3.65 g; 6h
Obverse: ΑΥΤ Κ - ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ; Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right., seen from rear.
Reverse: ΜΑϹΤΑΥΡƐ-ΙΤΩ; in exergue Ν; Humped bull standing right.
Ref: vii.1' target='_blank'>RPC VII.1 438/1-5.

Just for your info, the bull coin also has the following references:
SNG Cop 280; RPC VII 438; McClean 8679; Mionnet IV, 473; SNG Munich 325; Waddington 5096; Paris 745.

Which was the unpublished one you mentioned ? The Vienna 31931; RPC VII 437 one ?

Yes, that sort of is covered with the RPC 438/1-5, where she references the several collections that it was found in. The Paris example, is the Waddington coin under their collection number, referencing the Waddington catalog by Babelon. https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/7.1/438/

Here is the link to the coin that is unpublished that I didn't win:
