Unknown AE20 pot? on rev - any ideas?
« on: November 20, 2018, 02:47:50 am »
I can’t place this AE20.  Obv. Laureate head right. Base to chin right angle in right field. Another right angle higher in right field. Dots surrounding. Rev. Pot? on raised lattice platform. Perhaps this is actually characters below?    7 large pellets part surround.  19.5-20.5mm 6.6gr Axis 12hr Any suggestions?  Thanks

... My one is a very poor example. ...
I wouldn't say that, because it is an earlier variant of the coin shown by Pekka.

On your coin the legend is ΣIΔΩN-OΣ, in two lines and without a ΘEAΣ.
On the left of the cista you clearly see a Γ as part of the year.

This together leads to Rouvier 1425 and and Babelon 1709:

And this coin is now in the collection of the BnF in Paris: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b85366803.r=sidon%20-argent?rk=11330528;0
and looks very similar to yours  :).

It has the year ΓKP which is 123 of the Sidonian era which is about 13 AD. So the coin has been minted under Augustus (at least Babelon ascribes it to the reign of Augustus).
