I suspect that this Athenian diobol may be a fake.  Can anyone tell one way or the other by looking at these photos?  Thanks very much.

Definitely fake. The style, the surfaces, everything about it looks wrong.

Hi folks,

I agree. I thought the same thing as soon as I looked at it.

If only it was as easy for us to explain why we know it is fake, as it is easy for us just to know it is fake. People frequently ask me to explain "how to know" and then sometimes they get angry at me for not telling them. :)

The important thing is to know why a coin is genuine. Genuine coins are right in their own specific way. Fakes are wrong in an infinite possibility of ways that can't necessarily be defined.

I don't think it is any easier to explain how we know a coin is genuine. A picture is worth even more than a thousand words when you can't even come up with the right words.

Thank you for your replies, gentlemen!  I became suspicious of the coin because it was in near perfect condition.  I guess I can tell you now that I bought it from ancientground, who is already on your list of notorious sellers.  But I was not yet aware of your website when I bought it.  I suppose my next step would be to request a refund.  Then, should he decline my request, I imagine the seller ought to be reported to eBay and to PayPal.  And I'll file a Fake Coin Report, too.  Thanks again!

A fake should never be described as near perfect, or too nice or in any way that suggests a compliment. :)

File the request for refund in the eBay/ PayPal "Buyer protection plan."
Carefully save all emails you send to the seller and his/ her replies to you. You made need them in filing the dispute.
Of course, there is a time limit to file the dispute....30 days, I think.
Act fast if the deadline is near.
Good luck.
