Prutah or double-prutah under Archelaus?
« on: October 02, 2018, 03:00:13 pm »
Hello.

I have a problem with identification this coin. Do you know if it is a prutah or a double-prutah under Archelaus?

Kind regards,
Pawel

My one prutah example (H-504 / 1195) weighs 1.28 grams.  My two prutot example (H-503 / 1194) weighs 2.74 grams.

So as Jay infers, once you have the weight, attribution should be pretty straight-forward.

It weighs 1.12 g. Does it mean that it is an one prutah? Base on shape from book "A Numismatic Journey Through the Bible" it seems to be rather double-prutah...

Shape is variable, somewhat random, and does not indicate the denomination.

Thank you very much for your reply and help! Could you tell me some examples of literature where I could learn to recognize Biblical coins?

And on the page that Dominic gave you, the "Bible" for Biblical coins is David Hendin's "Guide to Biblical Coins" (5th ed.).

Start with Hendin as Craig suggests.  Maybe even stay with Hendin until you become super-advanced.  He blends the narrative with high numismatics, without needing to start from a belief-system.  Many entry level books on the topic assume the reader has a heavy investment in a belief-system.
Plus David Hendin is a nice guy and still very active in numismatics.
