Maximinus II reverse legend error
« on: September 16, 2018, 06:47:23 pm »
I thought i'd share this recent addition to my collection, which came as part of a group lot with 3 Roman glass flasks, an amphora and an oil lamp.

The coin isn't pretty, but when I looked more closely I noticed an interesting error on the reverse legend...VIRTS instead of VIRTVS  :)

Maximinus II, as Caesar, Æ Follis. Antioch, AD 308. GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES, laureate head right / VIRTS EX-ERCITVS, Virtus advancing right, holding transverse spear and trophy over shoulder, shield on left arm; S in right field, ANT in exergue. Cf. RIC 86. 7.42g, 25mm, 6h.

Interesting.  The Mars/Virtus is also a bit unusual.  He leans back quite a bit like the trophy is very heavy or he is drunk.
