Under
Domitian began the phase of a renewed
Roman expansion on the right of the Rhine in the
area of the Upper Germanic Army Group. When a war in
Germania seemed inevitable, the Emperor decided, after a council meeting, to march across the Rhine in 83 under the pretext of a
census in
Gaul. Presumably in the
spring of 83, the war against the chats began, the goal of which was to weaken the chatting as the last major source of trouble in the vicinity of the Rhine.
Domitian thrust deep into the heartland of Chatti, so far into today's Hesse. In autumn, the campaign in
Germania against the chats was brought to a successful conclusion. The subjugation of the
area between Taunus, Lahn and Main (Wetterau) succeeded.
Domitian finally began with the construction of the
Limes, the
Roman border wall between the Rhine and the Danube.
