Tetradrachm of Alexander III: Why Nike of Zeus' shoulder?
« on: March 18, 2018, 03:53:48 am »
Hallo everybody,
can anybody tell me, why the Corinthians have put a little Nike (or Athena?) on right shoulder of Zeus? Is there any connection with a battle or a victory?

Thanks a lot

The Nikai stand atop the throne backrest. Nikai became a feature of Corinthian coinage under Demetrios I Poliorketes on coinage that was struck to fund his preparations retake Asia Minor, which for him proved a catastrophically unsuccessful enterprise.  The iconography of the Nikai on the back rest of the throne continued on later Corinthian coinage down to the time of the Social War under Philip V ...  https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115704. It cannot be associated with any specific victory and in fact its introduction pre-empted the failure and downfall of Demetrios I.

Another example from the time of Demetrios.  ... https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115703

Any time ... the Alexanders of Corinth and the Peloponnesos make for a fascinating collecting theme and research topic.
