Divus Constantine I uncleaned Coin
« on: March 08, 2018, 09:33:56 am »
Just got a lot in of uncleaned Romans and I spotted this one straight away. It doesn't look like it needs much cleaning. My main objective is to get more detail from the coin. The reverse looks like there are signs of a brown patina beneath the green patina. I don't really care about the color, but I don't want to strip the coin.

Thanks

My advice: don't touch it. You will ruin the coin.

I have a feeling you're correct.  I don't think I'm getting more detail out it. It can't be something it's not.

There is no "brown patina" below the green. That is the just the copper or bronze toned to brown where it is already exposed to the air. You could call it patina but it is very thin and it does not exist under the green.

That slightly bluey green patina is really fragile. Don't mess with it.

Gentlemen, thank you for your wisdom. I am leaving it alone, at least I can attribute it.

Joe, thanks for explaining how it was darkened, I thought it that was another layer of patina.

If you have Ren wax (renaissance wax) you could put a bit on your fingers and rub the coin very gently.  It can help (slightly) bring out the detail.  It can also help (slightly) reduce the chance of further flaking from routine handling of the coin.

Thanks for the advice, I don't have any, but I really should buy some. Someone suggested an olive oil soak for a year, to bring out the detail.

Olive oil is used by some to clean.  But as a slightly acidic organic I think it would risk flaking away the remaining patina if left for a year.

otlichnik - thanks - Never used it before so I'm always hesitant.  May experiment on one of my bad ones though.
