Arabia Petraea?help to ID
« on: February 11, 2018, 04:55:26 am »
Hi
this is my last acquisition from (i suppose)  province of Arabia Petraea.

The Emperor should be Elagabalus
on the reverse is rapresented a seated figure (possibly Tyche) on rock holding Patera?
The legend on the reverse i presume is retrograde for the position on the N in the left part.

i found something on asearch coin from Adraa but the reverse dont match either for the legend and for the object.

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?term=elagabalus+adraa&category=1-2&en=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ot=1&images=1&currency=usd&thesaurus=1&order=0&company=

Thanks for help

Filippo

Hi Fil,

It looks like a Holy Land coin to me. But I don't know if it is Petra.

For comparison purposes, here is my Petra, Elagabalus coin (first coin):

This coins is also attributed to Adraa, with the same reverse legend as your coin. Possibly a die match.

hi
the coin showed by shanxy is Spijkerman 13, unfortunately in mine the figure in the reverse doesnt hold a club in right arm, instead there is a patera, i suppose, and for me its pretty hard to match the legend ΑΔΡΑ /  ΗΝΩΝ in my reverse.

Dear Filippo, Ralf, and Board,

Oddly enough, this Charachmoba bronze of Elagabalus appears to be a die match to the two coins under discussion:

I am not able to rectify the differences in the reverse legend yet, but then again, they may simply be due to the sediments and other factors.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

The the obv. legend should be corrected to AV K M AV - ANTW... because this is the obv. legend of all coins of Charab-Moba.

hi
this is another example taken from the store of an online seller.
The legend on the reverse if im not wrong is latin not greek, something like IMP M AV ANTVNIN ? pretty strange the M that resembling a W.
Still unclear the legend on the reverse

Fil.

cheers

I actually happen to have 5 examples of this type. It is common mistake to attribute it to Adraa, even Sofaer collection by Meshorer ( well, he passed away before it was published so Gabriela Bijovsky completed it) has two of them as Adraa, despite obviously female figure without a club. I even considered publishing it together with some additional new and misattributed city coins, but never got to it. It actually is Petra, half denomination of the common Elagabal foundation coin. It is hard to read because legend is retrograde and mixed Greek and Latin. It reads PETPA COЛNIA. All coins I have seen seem to be struck by two pairs of dies, one a bit bigger (like yours) and one smaller and more barbaric in style.
