Falling Horseman
« on: January 20, 2018, 08:54:08 am »
I have developed a bit of an interest in FEL TEMP coins. I have just received this one and thought it worthy of a CotD.

They don't often turn up fully silvered and this one has an unusual 3 dimensional wave effect created on shield.

Constantius II - AE2 - RIC VIII Constantinople 106
AE2
Obv:– D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, Pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right
Rev:– FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Helmeted soldier to left, shield on left arm, spearing falling horseman; shield on ground at right. Horseman is bearded and falls forward clutching his horse. his hair is tied in a top-knot.
Minted in Constantinople (G dot _ //CONSI).
Reference:- RIC VIII Constantinople 106

Great coin!

I do not believe I have seen one fully silvered before like this.

Have you come across that same wavy effect in the shield on other fel temps?

Peter

No I haven't. I did see this recently with a spiral pattern on the shield.

They do turn up fully silvered once in a while. Here is another one -- this time of Constans.
