Thank you, JC.  Unfortunately, I have been largely absent the past year.  I wouldn't feel right taking votes from the others (this year!) so please do not include me.

My favorite candidate is Robert L, a Parthian and Elymais specialist, whose knowledge and  helpfulness are difficult to match.  Hope I do not come too late with my suggestion.

Robert L has declined to reveal his full name, so our list of candidates is as above.  I will set up the poll shortly.  Congratulations to our Nominees and thanks to Din X and Robert L3 for supporting our community.

Best wishes to all the nominees!  As Walter said, worthy members all.

It is ironic that after being selected last year I actually had my "worst" numismatic year ever.  Changes to work, moving house again (just locally but still all the work) and a daughter going off to university greatly ate into my collecting time (and funds).  I only made one coin purchase last year - a small lot of Qing cash, so not even in my top 5 areas of collecting.  I also spent far less time than I had hoped on the forum.  I did continue to work on my collection, attributing many coins and making more of my hand-written tags.  I also read a fair bit and maintained my ANS membership.  But I am hoping to be  bit more active in 2017.

Looking forward to "passing the torch" soon.

Hi Otlichnik,

Interested in your phrase "passing the torch". Did you take that from Lucretius? "Saecla animantum, quasi cursores, vitae lampada tradunt"

Regards,

Mauseus

No.  I had not thought of Lucretius.  Just a common saying I grew up with.  Canadians all grew up with the Flanders Field poem which ends with:

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
      In Flanders fields.

Of course I did not have that actually in mind when I wrote the message.  It would be highly silly and insulting to compare anything else with the struggle of WWI vets.  Just to say that maybe it is more of a local term than I thought.

Is it really that embarrassing? Shows how different the cultures on opposite sides of the Atlantic are; I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Hi,

The Lucretius roughly translates as "Through time living thigs, like runners, pass on the torch of life". Shawn, both the uses of passing the torch phrase are rather apt.

Kind regards,

Rich
