Bronze disease - before and after
« on: September 04, 2017, 10:46:16 pm »
This decent Caligula As came with a rather nasty dose of BD.
After a relatively successful treatment, it now looks a bit better.
Nothing could be done to reverse the surface damage, but at
least the horrible green stuff has substantially gone. FYI

Looks good, considering the problem.  How did you treat it?

Really nice job! I had the same type of coin go from nice VF to destroyed in a matter of days by bronze disease. It happened so fast, it was unbelievable.  Glad you saved yours!

I had major BD issues with the exact same type too!  It was heavily waxed but I could see the BD underneath.  Got it for a very good price, striped the wax off, then went at the BD.

Must be something about the copper used for this issue.......

Joe, It was a rather high-risk, low-reward method.
Not recommended AT ALL! Will contact you off-list.
I don't want to lead anyone astray and risk destroying
otherwise good coins. This was bad enough to take a
risk, and good enough to hope for a good outcome.

Now that you mention it, I have had about half-a-dozen or more
of these over the years that have also turned that nasty BD green.
Perhaps it is something in the metal, or perhaps something to do
with where they were lost/found, and the soil conditions.
Who knows!

I discussed this with a dealer years ago.  As I recall, he said there was a hoard of these that were all prone to BD.

Here are the pictures of my coin when it first broke through to the surface.
