Storage for aes grave and other irregularly shaped coins
« on: June 30, 2017, 03:45:07 pm »
I recently won my first early cast coin in an auction, an aes grave uncia. I normally keep coins in 2x2 paper envelopes in double row 2x2 boxes. As I begin adding more aes grave and aes rude to my collection I doubt most will fit or will not fit well. I'm wondering what sort of storage methods members here recommend for these coins? I can keep old tags and whatnot elsewhere but I would like to have some way to keep at least my collection number on them in case someone other than me is tasked with uniting the coins with their documentation in the future.

This may not help you; but I use trays.  Just don't spill them.

I use archive-safe coin flips which I store in coin album sleeves, with original tags and my own (when I find the time to print them out). I find that to be the most convenient option and it works for me.

Trays look nice but I am prone to dropping and spilling so out of the question for me!

I have also used 2 x 2 boxes, which are convenient from a longer term storage point of view, but it feels like I am drawing raffle tickets whenever I need to find a particular coin.

It sounds like you might need one storage solution for your "normal" coins and then another for your Aes Rude and Aes Grave. Envelopes sound like a good solution for those larger coins. Presumably you are using acid-free envelopes?

I use the Abafil deluxe deep trays for big coins - an 87g aes grave triens is the biggest I've got, but they should be fine for larger lumps too.

+1 for double deep Abafil trays.  They're the bomb for your aes

I am late to this thread but I recently discussed  this with an Aes Grave specialist.
The issue  of storage and presentation are distinct according to specialist.   Use pvc free   flips for  storage up to size/budget tolerance, which might mean  purchasing a 50 pack of 2.5x 2.5 flips to store all of your Aes Grave fractions.  (Which are gigantic for ancients.)

If budget does not support such large flips, wrap the coins in acid-free paper.  If the collector gets an opportunity to display Aes Grave to interested viewers, (which are frankly few),  then use an un-divided Abafil or similar tray.  Collectors of Aes Grave probably want to hold them in hand anyway.

Large Aes Grave As (libral or semi-libral) and other large cast coins simply do not fit well even in the double-deep Abafil trays.   If the budget supports Aes Grave As, then you probably can find a way to obtain an undivided Abafil tray for display as needed.  If you have several large Aes Grave, (lucky you), store and display separately.

My Aes Grave are kept in pvc free flips in cardboard "slab-size" boxes for the fractions, and my full Aes Grave As are in Acid-free envelopes. I use nice pieces of felt to display loose large coins.
