Maroneia fakes
« on: January 02, 2017, 01:12:42 pm »
I did not like the style (eyes are just lol) + artificial wear of this fake currently at auction and checked it and voilà, Published in the IAPN BOC Vol 18, No. 2 in 1993 - example 3a.

I have looked then at the examples in acesarch and found 2 other coins which looked wrong and which then turned out to be published fakes, too.

Ilya Prokopov : "struck Slavey fake coin. See: 1997, p.11, no. 20. "

Not so clever at all! All fakes are made by people without knowledge of ancient Greek. Whereas ΣΩTHPOΣ is genitive case, ΔIONYΣOΣ is nominative, but should be genitive case too which is ΔIONYΣOY (congruentia!)

I have added the coin from my collection.

Best regards

For Jochen to his grammatical commentary to the fake Maroneia tetradrachms addes another fake exemple with the name ΔIONYΣOΣ in nominative, let me add a genuine exemple from my collection with the proper genetive ΔIONYΣOY for comparison purpose.

Best wishes for the year 2017!
