When assessing the coins available at
Forum, one must always take into account time. Really interesting, really nice coins sell immediately. I do not know the extent of Joe's clientel, but if there is something you really want, grab it. Others will do it, if you do not.
Not that long ago I missed a day or two to check and found two Civil War "
Augustus"
type coins
had appeared. Reasonably priced and one gone already. I grabbed the other one and I am really happy about that coin. Worn and with deep dark
patina, but very
rare and historically fascinating indeed. During the 25 years I have seriously collected coins, this was the second one I could afford and not many others have been around (
bull type). I have another one, from the
Vecchi "
Augustus" sale (great sale by the way) and its
rarity is well demonstrated by the fact that it is one of the only three coins of this
type Ponting and
Butcher could analyze for its metal content.
99% silver bullion,
Spanish mint trace metals. It is strange to thnk that the Rio Tinto mines one can visit today, once gave the silver to produce this little piece now in Finland. (Bowmore Islay 12 years single malt does have an effect, I notice)
