here's a similar facing head Athena, this one from Herakleia in Lucania, a coin i consider a masterpiece of the engraver's art...

How about two heads facing.  I've always found this a very beautiful design.

Out of curiosity, what's the earliest facing emperor depicted on a coin?

Off hand the earliest one I can think of is Postumus (below). But I am sure I will be corrected if I'm wrong.  ;D

Alex

The first Roman ruler depicted in a facing portrait was Octavian/Augustus in this very rare denarius.

One of my favorite tiny facing silver...the reverse is amazing as well. It still astounds me at ow they made dies with so much detail for such tiny coins!

Agreed! Even with the test cut, beautiful coin! It was nice of them to cut in an area that did not detract from the obverse OR the reverse;D

Here is another AE, only larger that I like quite a bit...

Thessaly, Larissa mint, 400-344 B.C. AE, 19mm 7.57g, SNG Cop 141 var (rev legend), BMC Thessaly to Aetolia pg. 31, 83 var (rev legend)
O: Head of nymph Larissa facing slightly left, crowned with corn
R: ΛAPIΣ[AIΩN] (or similar), Horseman r. wearing petasus and chiton, holding lance, horse prancing
