Lucius Verus Denarius Authentication help
« on: December 29, 2015, 12:44:08 am »
Hi All,

Bit new to the coin collecting game, and purchased a short while ago a Lucius Verus Denarius (RIC ref 482) from a reputable dealer. However the more I look at it the more concerned I am. It's slightly underweight at 3.08g compared to other examples, die axis is fine at 12. size 18mm. But it looks like tooling around the edge and feels off in some way.

I'd appreciate any opinions on it.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

I wonder if your coin was once mounted in a piece of jewelry.  It might account for some of the suspicious qualities you mentioned.  The weight is fine for this time period.

I agree with Matt, it looks like your coin was filed for mounting. Otherwise, it looks genuine.
