Next up is this Ake (AKKO) coin with ancient graffiti.

After reading the compelling works of Le Rider in is book named "Alexander The Great - Coinage, Finances and Policy", i have now reattributed this coin to Tyre.

Hope you like it. ;)

`Abd`astart II, regnal year 2 (341-340 B.C)

Phoenicia, Sidon 342-339 B.C

AR 10.08mm (Thickness 1.28mm), weight 0.74g, die axis = 12h (0 degrees), 1/16 Shekel.

Obverse: Galley left with oars and row of shields; below waves, regnal era date 2 (341-340 B.C) above, cable border.

Reverse: `Abd`astart II (Persian King) wearing crenellated crown right, (seizing Lions forelock with left hand, and holding dagger in right) slaying lion standing before him on hind legs, Phoenician letters ayin (`) ayin (`) between, Square incuse.

It´s unusual to have clear regnal era dates on this type, so i am quite pleased.

Advancing our knowledge of Tyrian coinage in the name of Alexander III

Here is my latest acquisition, a wonderful Alexander III tetradrachm during the reign of Ozmilk (Azemilkos). Thought to have been minted in AKE but now attributed to Tyre.  ;)

Thanks guys.

This is my second Alexander of Tyre (formerly AKE) with graffiti on the reverse. We know that coins dating from around this period were found with letters on them i.e Price 3283a (notes; obv. countermark: shell ?/rev. [TH] Aramaic graffito: aleph).

Here is a link to my era date 32 of Tyre with graffiti.

https://phoeniciancoins.wordpress.com/2015/10/23/ancient-graffiti-on-ake-tetradrachm/

Are there any members that recognise the markings or letters on my latest Alexander from Tyre ?

Martin

Dear Forvm Members,

If i come across as being overpowering or a little too overzealous in my quest for knowledge and a deeper understanding of Phoenician coins, then i apologize. I know that i can be a stickler for facts and accuracy when helping fellow members with attribution requests, possibly to the point of or risk of aggravation. The advancement of this area of collecting is of the upmost importance to me. In recent years more and more collectors have taken an interest in Phoenician coins, culminating in noticeable increases of coin sales through the various auction sites and online shops. Of course i am not solely responsible for the increased interest in Phoenician mints, but i would like to think that my efforts have had some bearing on recent activity.

I do try to let my hair down occasionally, so please try and bear with me.

My collection now consists of approximately 450 Phoenician coins with many more waiting to be attributed.

If only time was a little more generous !

1/16 shekel of Sidon with three turreted towers

The engraver seems to have crammed in so many features on this early coin of Sidon. On the obverse there are three turreted city towers forefront, we can also see distant walls behind the turrets (image below). Below in exerque a lion crouching left below the city walls, unfortunately the lions legs are slightly of flan and the head is extremely worn. On the reverse Persian King Abd´esmun wearing crenelated crown (Kidaris) standing right shooting bow, in left field a goats head and in right satyr or bes (dwarf god).
