Hello everyone.
I wasn't satisfied with my old gallery, so I've decided a new start, newly organized and with better pictures.
The first coin of this new era is a rare dupondius of Domitian as Caesar under Titus, just arrived today.
I love the reverse: look at Vesta holding the Palladium!
Kind regards
Alberto

Very good idea, Alberto, as (quite funny) I'm also in the process of doing so for my Flavians (but I'm a little bit more lazzy than you).

Wow, that really is a fantastic reverse! Great coin!

Hello everyone.
The MARS VICTOR type was started on sestertii by Vitellius first.
Vespasian resumed it on his early sestertii.
Domitian repeated it on medium bronzes (asses and dupondii) issued in 85-87 A.D..
I would like to share a couple of examples from recent additions to my flavian collection.
Kind regards.

Hello everyone,
thanks to Pierre and Joe for their nice comments.
Today I've added three rare Domitian denarii: RIC 786 var. (Maia), RIC 338 & 339 (Minerva standing with spear).
Only 786 & 338 are really new, since I've already had 339 in my collection. I uploaded it since it is from the same issue of 338, with the only difference of the aegis on 339.
Both are rated R2 in the new R.I.C., but I believe that 338 (without aegis) is rarer.
Kind regards

Sincere congrats, Pierre

Thanks David.
Recently I've been busy submitting many coins from my collection to either Coinproject and AsiaMinorCoins, therefore I must admit that I've neglected my gallery.
I will soon come back to it.

Hello everyone.
Today I've added four AE provincial coins, struck in Ephesus during the last years of Domitian reign, and meant to celebrate the alliance with Smyrna.
All of them are of fine style; the Domitia's portrait is the best in my collection.

Hello everyone.
This is my first denarius in over a month, since I've been dealing with AE and provincials mostly.
RIC 342 it's a rare issue of 85 A.D., a magical year for Domitian coinage, with CENS POT on reverse legend as in AE coinage second issue of the same year.
This coin is missing in R.S.C. as well as in major collections.

Hello everyone.
Today I've added three flavian AE from Thessalonica in Macedonia.
My last acquisition is Vespasian's RPC 319. The Editors of RPC II knew (eight, edit) thirteen specimen of this coin, yet no one with a fully readable obverse legend. Therefore, mine could be the first known.

Hello everyone.
Today I received in the mail three denarii I won in some recent Spanish auction.
The first one is a Vespasian dynastic issue from Ephesus (RIC 1430), a type that was missing in my collection so far.
Two are rare Domitian issues of year 88, a significant year for his silver coinage (RIC 568 and 656).
I especially like the type with the across field reverse legend, therefore I decided to upload three other rare denarii that already were in my collection.

Hello everyone.
Today I've added two extremely rare AE coins of Domitian, hypothetically assigned to the mint of Nicaea, with flying Nike on reverse.
The editors of RPC new only one specimen of the coin (in BM coll.) with obverse legend ending with ΣEBAΣTOΣ.
In the S2 Supplement a new variant was mentioned, with the obverse legend ending with ΓEP.
My first coin shows the first type legend, being possibly the second specimen known.
The other coin is more like the second type, but slightly different (AY instead of AYT at the beginning of obverse legend).
Since the example cited in the S2 Supplement is not pictured, I don't know whether my coin is a actually third variety or there's been some misreading.

Hello everyone.
Today I've added to my gallery a very rare Domitian denarius, belonging to the sixth and last issue of 85 A.D..
This issue was struck for a very short period, just after the eleventh acclamation and before the beginning of the twelfth consulship.
The editors of R.I.C. mention only two specimens, strangely enough both belonging to fellow members of Forum (AM and JM).
Mine appears to share the obverse die with the RIC's plate coin (AM coll.).

Hello everyone.
I've got two nice coins today in the mail: a Domitian Silver Tetradrachm from Tarsus (RPC 1727) and an As of Titus as Caesar with Spes on reverse (RIC 751, Vespasian).
Both lovely coins, I think.
The silver tetradrachms are among my favorite coins, and I have a true passion for river-gods, so I'm very happy having both the flavian issues in my collection.

Hello everyone.
As a collector, one of the things that gratify me most is to spot rarities that others do not recognize.
Therefore I was very excited this morning when the postman handed me the envelope containing this denarius of Domitian Caesar with Pegasus on the reverse.
The coin was advertised as mint of Rome, but I had immediately noticed the differences in the style of portrait and lettering, not to mention the small "o" at the base of the neck, which could barely seen in the photo, but that is clearly readable in hand.
Moreover, the portrait of Domitian in the Roman version is unmistakable, with nose and chin particularly accentuated in most cases, as you can see from the close comparison.
This coin belongs to an Eastern Mint, possibly Ephesus, and is apparently of the same dies as the RIC's plate specimen.
The editors of RIC emphasize how the subject is taken from the coinage of Augustus. In the mint of Rome this subject was exclusively minted for Domitian, being probably his commoner coin struck under Vespasian.
As the winged horse was considered a patron of the arts, David Corson the author of the novel "Domitia and Domitian" assumes that the subject was chosen by the future empress, because at that time Domitian was very passionate about literary composition .
I've added to my gallery also two examples of the Roman type (RIC 921, Vespasian) from different dies.
Kind regards

Flavian collectors will always be happy to acquire denarii from this rare and interesting "annulet below portrait" mint!
The appearance of annulets on some late denarii of Ephesus seems to me very tenuous evidence for assigning this series too to Ephesus, however, even with the addition of (?) to indicate uncertainty!
This series is several years later, and has completely different legends and rev. types, copied from Rome, and completely different style. Those factors should indicate a different mint, the shared annulets probably being merely coincidental.
So I think we should drop RIC's "Ephesus (?)" attribution, and return to that of RPC and BMC: "uncertain Asia Minor mint".
-
Hello everyone.
This happens to be a busy week for my postman!
Today I've received another beautiful Domitian's denarius, with the PONT legend on obverse.
When Domitian succeeded to his brother Titus, he gained the title of Pontifex Maximus, the supreme religious authority in Rome.
In the coinage this title was usually written "P M", but in his very first and rarer issues the engravers wrote "PONT".
This RIC 27 (the auction house wrongly described as RIC 56) is possibly the second specimen known and much well preserved than RIC's plate coin, belonging to the Oxford collection.
In the occasion I've taken new pictures of my previously owned three PONT denarii and I've added them to my gallery.

A beautiful coin, apparently from the same dies as the worn Oxford specimen!
PONT on these rare coins of Domitian probably reflects his real status at the time: before claiming the title P M, he probably waited until the relevant popular assembly had met and voted him that title, maybe a month or so after his accession.
For a number of other emperors, the Arval Acts record the meeting of the assembly that voted them the office of P M, a little while after their accessions.
-
Thanks Curtis, that would be a good explanation for the difference!

Hello everyone.
Today I've added three scarce coins, each showing the same reverse: one legionary eagle between two military standards.
There is an As of Vespasian and two Domitian Cistophori.

The cistophori were purchased from H.J. Berk and they came each with a nice C.C. ticket.

Hello everyone.
Today I have three new additions to show, one provincial bronze, and two denarii, each one scarce if not rare.
First is an AE21 of Domitian (RPC 687) probably struck in Prusias ad Hypium (Bithynia) with a nice temple reverse; it's uncertain whether the coin depicts the Rome Capitolium or a local building.
Strangely enough, both the denarii are missing in David's gallery.
Vespasian RIC 1477 (° mint series) was completely overlooked and shares the obverse die with the Paris example and with my RIC 1475.
Titus RIC 31 has a nice left portrait.

Hello everyone.
Peace is a well known and common reverse for Flavian bronze coinage, usually depicted as a female figure, standing with cornucopiae and olive branch.
In a much scarcer type, only on sestertii, Peace is shown in the attitude of setting fire to a pile of arms.
Vespasian's version is more detailed, Domitian's one has more similarities with the ordinary type.
Today I've added three of these coins to my gallery:
Vespasian RIC 241: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-100111

Hello everyone,
Alexandrian AE coinage of Domitian is clearly divided in two periods.
In the first nine years of reign the style is rough, while starting from year 10 a great improvement can be observed.
Dattari (Appunti di Numismatica Alessandrina p. 9), noting that the style of the portrait became almost identical to that of the mint of Rome, came to assume that the coins were minted in Rome precisely.
I've added to my gallery a few examples.

Hello everyone.
During the reign of Domitian the mint of Rome struck a variety of silver coins meant to circulate in the eastern provinces.
They had legends either in Latin (Cistophori for Asia Minor) or Greek (Drachms for Lycia and Didrachms for Cappadocia).
Today I've added two didrachms, struck in the thirteenth year of his reign (93-94).
These coins are in perfect roman style, just heavier and thicker than contemporary denarii.

Hello everyone,
today I've received in the mail some Flavian rarity.
The first coin is an early Vespasian denarius, struck somewhere in Spain.
This coin was highly valued in old catalogs: Cohen 100 Golden Francs vs 2 for common types (1880), R.S.C. 240 GBP vs 50 for common types (1979).
At present there are much less specialist collectors looking for rarities, so price is much lower.
Kind regards
Alberto

The Province of Cilicia was created by Vespasian in AD 72: Cilicia Pedias was formerly part of Syria, Cilicia Tracheia was part of the Kingdom of Commagene.
Coins form Cilicia Tracheia in the Flavian era are quite scarcer than those of Cilicia Pedias.
Here are two rare types from Anemurium (Titus) and Soli- Pompeiopolis (Domitian).

Last three coins to show.
The most significant is a very rare early As of Titus as Augustus, struck in the very beginning of this reign.
RIC 70 is missing in all the major collections and it's not pictured in RIC.
I've added also another Titus As and a scarce Vespasian from Apamea.

Hello everyone,
today I've added to my gallery two Alexandria tetradrachms struck during the short reign of Titus.
No bronze coins were struck in Egypt in the name of Titus, only billon tetradrachms.
They are of course much scarcer than those of Vespasian, but to my eyes they show a better style too.
The first one, with Omonoia (Concordia) on reverse is better preserved, but I like very much also the Nile portrait and the toning on the other one.

Hello everyone.
Today I've added my first brockage, with a nice incuse portrait of Titus.
Unfortunately it's very difficult to take a good picture because of its patina, the coin itself is much better in hand.
I've already got a regular example in my collection that I'm posting for comparison.

Hello everyone.
In the Flavian coinage left portraits are usually scarcer than the right ones.
Yet there are exceptions, like some Titus sestertii as Augustus and the denarii of Vespasian with modius on reverse.
Today I've finally received the right portrait one, and I'm adding both to my galleries.
As a curiosity I will show here an unusual tooled denarius: in this worn example of Vespasian RIC 980, the obverse has been reworked to become a Domitian.

That's a very successful tooling job, if Domitian really started as Vespasian!
Are you sure it's not actually an ancient forgery with hybrid type combination?

Well, I've purchased the coin some ten years ago considering as a mule.
No sign of plating, despite the low weight of the coin. Also the style of the portrait and the lettering are crude.
So I started considering tooling as a possibility, but I can't be sure and I value your judgment.

Hello everyone.
Today I've added to my gallery the two coins (Didrachm and Sestertius) that I've showed in today's Domitian birthday thread, plus a very rare early denarius.

Hello everyone,
today I've received some interesting coins, that I'm going to post here.
The first one is a very rare laureate dupondius of Titus as Caesar.
This coin belongs to a small issue of 74 A D of brass coins with laureate heads and without S C on reverse; that's the reason why Gnecchi, 100 years ago, included them in his book about Roman medallions.
In past years this issue it's been assigned to various mints such as Samosata in Commagene and Antiochia in Syria. According to the current opinion, due to style and die axis, they were struck in Rome for circulation in Syria.
I've also added to my gallery three other coins of the same issue: two Vespasian and one Domitian. The left portrait was my first Vespasian purchase (in 1985) and is still one of my favorites.

-
Hello everyone.
After the death of Vespasian, all the peripherals mints still active (Lugdunum, Antiochia ad Orontem, Ephesus) ceased to struck imperial coins.
The only one exception was a mysterious oriental mint (which is now believed to be located in Thrace, maybe in Perinthus) who issued a small series of coins in Orichalcum (sestertii and dupondii) during the reign of Titus and in the first two years of the reign of Domitian.
Their reverse replicated some subjects of the coinage of Vespasian, including, on sestertii, Mars in heroic nudity.
The last edition of RIC lists two varieties struck under Titus for Domitian as Caesar: 509 and 510.
The only difference between them is in the obverse legend: 509 has DOMITIANVS while 510 has the shorter DOMITIAN. RPC regroups them all under # 505.
RIC rates both coins R2; actually 509 is no more really rare (many specimen can be found online), while 510 is still very hard to find.
I've just added one spec to my collection.
Kind regards

Hello everyone.
I heartly agree with David Atherton when he says that 88 A.D. was the best year for Domitian coinage.
When it comes to denarii, I have a special feeling for legend across fild on reverse and the full title GERMANICVS on obverse.
Therefore I've been very pleased to get this very rare RIC 564, in great condition.
In the meantime I've started a new album dedicated to ancient forgeries. It starts with a very rare imitation of RIC 563 of the same issue.

Hello everyone.
Imperial bronzes of Domitia are extremely rare, I've never seen one on sale in many years of collecting.
I found a nice substitute with this "Padouan" (after Giovanni Cavino aka Padovanino, an italian medallist who lived in 16th century, whose best known works are his imitations of Roman large-brass coins and medallions).
The real coin was valued 1500 Golden Francs by Henry Cohen in his 19th century catalogue of Roman Coins.

Hello everyone.
My last acquisition is the very first coin of this subject: the dupondius RIC 297 belongs to the first issue of 85 A D.

Hello everyone,
today I've added to nice and scarce provincials.
The coin of Domitia is from the rare city of Domitianopolis Sala in Lydia, the only one I know that was renamed after Domitian.
The coin of Domitian is another variant of RPC 709: obverse legend is the same cited (no picture though) in the S2 Supplement.
I've forwarded it to Michel Amandry; he's working on the S3 Supplement that should be completed by the end of March.

Hello everyone,
today I've added two new coins, both unpublished so far.
First comes an As of Vespasian, struck toward the end of his reign, with Victory on reverse. Its singularity is the reverse legend: is anticlockwise, outwardly, while the known examples of RIC 1013 has the legend clockwise, inwardly.
Than is a Denarius of Domitian as Caesar under his brother. The reverse is the same as RIC 267, but has a left portrait.
The coin is underweight, yet has a small fracture (8/9 h) that may have caused some loss of metal.

Hello everyone.
Peace after Civil War was the most significant achievement of Vespasian reign and it was largely celebrated in his coinage.
The Templum Pacis (Temple of Peace) was the most beautiful monument erected by the Flavians, together with the Colosseum (Amphitheatrum Flavium).
In this temple was stored the booty retrieved from the Jewish war.
Perhaps the reverse of this coins show the statue of Peace that was inside the temple.

Hello everyone,
today I've added two new coins and a reshoot of an old one:

- a scarce Titus as Caesar dupondius struck in Rome for eastern circulation: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-105565

Hello everyone,
today I've received this interesting variant of RIC 772, a common Vespasian denarius.
The obverse legend is missing the final AVG; the engravers was short of space, therefore his mistake, I think.

An interesting error!
My possible explanation: not running out of space, but confusion with Titus' contemporaneous legend,
T CAESAR VESPASIANVS.
The engraver started the legend correctly for Vespasian,
IMP CAESAR,
but then got it into his head that it was a die of Titus, so finished with VESPASIANVS only, rather than VESPASIANVS AVG !
-
Thanks Curtis for your comment: it's very astute as usual!
I've edited the technical data of the regular coin as they were wrongly duplicated as you noted.
Kind regards
Alberto
-
Interesting error! One that many would miss upon first glance.
Congrats on a nice find!
To be fair, in this case I must give credit to the seller, that pointed it out!
Alberto
-
That's the sort of error that a competent seller, who has to catalogue the coin and should check its types and legends against the catalogue, really ought to notice and point out in his description.
A buyer, however, will often overlook such an error if the seller doesn't point it out, for even a specialized buyer can't keep all the attested variants in his head, and won't have the time and stamina to look up every coin in the standard catalogues, or even to carefully examine the types and legends of all the coins which at first glance look common, checking for unsuspected legend errors or obscure typological variants!
-
I was overhasty: Titus' obverse legend on his parallel TR P IIII Pax seated coins was not
T CAESAR VESPASIANVS, but rather
T CAESAR IMP VESPASIAN.
That makes it difficult to explain the omitted AVG on Alberto's coin as a confusion with the contemporaneous legend of Titus!
-
Curtis, Perhaps the engraver had recently worked on the parallel Titus die which indeed does not end in AVG and made the same mistake here. I'm not totally discounting your first theory yet!
-
Hello everyone.
I've been hunting this variety since Lucas H showed his own and finally I got it!

Hello everyone.
Today I've added to scarce Domitian middle bronzes minted under Vespasian.
The As has a juvenile portrait and the popular VICTORIA reverse.

The Dupondius has the CERES reverse: you can easily find it struck under Titus (either in Rome or Thrace), but rarely seen with the draped bust typical of Domitian dupondii struck under Vespasian.

Hello everyone.
This sestertius with Annona facing Ceres on reverse, was shortly struck by Domitian (between 85 and 86 A D) copying a well known Nero reverse.

Hello everyone,
I've crossed the Rubicone and purchased a denarius of Titus' daughter.
These coins are far from rare (you can easily find them either in auction and in retail) nonetheless they are expensive and they have always been (Cohen gave a 30 Gold Francs value in 1800, Seaby in the sixties 480 GB pounds!).
Well, now I'm pleased to have finally added one nice example to my collection.

Yes, Julia Titi is not a great rarity, if you have the money you can pick one up fairly readily as Alberto says, but on the other hand her denarii are not common either.
My comment on a specimen Harlan Berk had recently:
"Scarcer than the "C2" rating in the new RIC would appear to indicate: only eight specimens in Reka Devnia hoard, plus four other denarii of Julia Titi with other types, compared to 431 denarii of Titus and, for example, 47 denarii of Otho in the same hoard!"
So Julia Titi is about 35 times as rare as Titus on denarii, and about four times rarer than Otho.

Thanks Curtis for your note and everybody else for kind comments.

Hello everyone.
The series of the Secular Games is by far my favorite of all and my greatest aspiration as a collector would be to complete it.
Unfortunately the coins in AE, although classified as "C" (= common) by the authors of RIC, are actually quite rare, with the notable exception of the as RIC 623, the only one meant to circulate throughout the empire.
The dupondius RIC 618, which has the same reverse of the as mentioned above, is much rarer: it is missing in Cohen, BMCRE, RIC first edition, WW (the example posted is a RIC 625 wrongly referenced) and acsearch. I found only another example in the CNG archives.
I am therefore very excited to add to my collection this specimen, worn but still perfectly readable.

Hello everyone.
The coins of Domitian bearing his 6th consulship were issued in 79 A D. It's still uncertain whether they were struck before or after the death of Vespasian.
The editors of RIC last edition have assigned some coins to the reign of Vespasian and other to the reign of Titus, on the ground of style.
They are all very rare, in any case.
This interesting As, with Victory on reverse, is supposed to belong to the reign of Titus.

Hello everyone,
I've found two new coins in my Easter egg. ;)
First is a common but nicely toned denarius of Titus.
The second is a milestone in my collection: my first coin of Domitia struck in Rome (though meant to circulate in the East).
The coin is quite alike my Julia Titi denarius: similar portrait and identical reverse with Venus, yet much bigger.

Obviously I misunderstand how regnal years are calculated. Vespasian was proclaimed emperor in Alexandria on July 1, 69, how does year 9 equal 76-77? I'm sure this is painfully obvious but I don't see it.

Interesting Alberto.
I found a good explanation for this in an article written by David Vagi. He explains that the regnal years at Alexandria began on August 29 of each year and continued through August 28 of the following year. In some cases two regnal years are counted in the same calendar year, for example Vespasian in 69. The first regnal year is counted for the portion of time he ruled in 69 till August 28 and his second year started August 29, 69 into 70.
Those nutty provincials!

Hello everyone,
when I started collecting roman coins I had only an old handbook written by Francesco Gnecchi, an italian collector and numismatist well known for his work about medallions.
His main advice for the new collectors was: rarity comes first, as some coin can show up only once in a lifetime, while common coins can always be found, it's only a matter of price.
I always stick to it (it's a bit out of fashion, I know), and I'm very proud to share these great rarities,
Actually only RIC 306 is a new purchase, but I've decided two upload them both, since they share the same obverse die.
I know of a third example of RIC 301, a fantastic coin sold by NAC some years ago, while RIC 306 could be the second known.
Kind regards

A nice pair of sestertii!
RIC 306: the specimen described and illustrated by RIC is in Copenhagen. What made this coin unique, however, was only the obverse legend variety, writing DOMITIAN rather than DOMITIANVS. The rev. type is much more interesting than that minor obverse legend variety! The type of Victory holding a cornucopia occurs only on sestertii of Titus and of Domitian as Caesar in 80-81 AD, nowhere else in the Roman coinage. There may be only two such reverse dies, yours with legend VICTORIA AVG, known for Titus (RIC 179-80, obv. head r. or l.) and Domitian (RIC 305-6, DOMITIANVS or DOMITIAN in obv. legend). The second variety has legend VICTORIA AVGVST, so far known only for Titus (RIC 182). According to RIC 181, there is a third variety with legend VICTORIA AVG, Victory holding a cornucopia but not leaning on a column, attested by coins in Berlin and Vienna. But are these coins correctly reported? Might they not be from the same known VICTORIA AVG die, but with the column worn away or overlooked? I can't fully believe in the existence of this third variety until I actually see such a coin; a shame RIC didn't illustrate this variety!
RIC 301: Your specimen is important for confirming that Victory indeed holds her expected wreath in her r. hand. The specimen RIC illustrates, from the BM photofile, seems to show a wreath, but it is somewhat tooled. The NAC coin that you mention, however, NAC 33, 2006, lot 464, seems to show Victory holding a flower rather than a wreath. A syncretic deity combining Victory and Spes, NAC comments, and this interpretation was accepted in RIC's footnote on the coin, p. 216, note 47. However, your coin, clearly not tooled, is from the same dies as the other two, and shows Victory holding her normal wreath! It must be just a slight doublestrike, also visible in the S of S C, which has deformed the wreath on the NAC coin, and made the remains look like a flower. Here is that NAC coin, followed by Alberto's:

Hello everyone,
April has been indeed a very special month for my collection, as I found a lot of coins I didn't seen in years.
These are the final four, all of them purchased in the same European auction; I have no clue about the provenance, but I believe that most of them (if not all) where laying in the same collection.
All of them are in great condition too.
Starting with a denarius from Ephesus, the most rare of the series, perhaps:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-109143
Then an oricalchum coin (RIC calls this size Denomination 2) part of a series struck in Asia Minor (Ephesus?) and possibly related to the "°" mint denarii:

Hello,
I'd like to share two new coins I've received today in the mail.
The first one is a sestertius of Titus as Caesar with Victory on reverse, belonging to a very rare issue of year 72 (IMP III in obv. legend). It is missing in RIC and other standard references; yet another example was sold in a Gemini auction (ex Harry Sneh), therefore my coin should be the second known so far.

The second one is a sestertius of Titus as Augustus; it is pretty worn, but shows a very significant reverse: the two sons of Vespasian clasping hands and Concordia is between them.

Domitian adopted in 85 A.d., mostly in his second issue (CENS POT).

Hello everyone,
back home from a holiday I found my last purchase, a rare Domitian sestertius struck during the reign of Titus.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-112546
The Minerva fighting reverse is probably the most popular subject in the coinage of Domitian; it's been struck in silver starting from 76 A.D. all along until the end his own reign. It's been largely struck in bronze too, yet for a shorter period: the reign of Titus and the very beginning of his own reign.
I managed to take new pictures of my older sestertii of this type belonging to the reign of Titus.

Hello everyone.
FELICITAS PVBLICA is a well known reverse for Dupondii, struck during the reign of Vespasian.
The last edition of R.I.C. lists only one As for Vespasian, RIC 725 (R2), known in very few examples.
In a recent Italian auction I've spotted this so far unpublished left portrait variant.
It has laureate head, legend fitting for an As, metal looking like copper.
Prof. Carradice wrote me that he knows of another example, sold by Sayles & Lavender in 2009.

Hello everyone,
this Victory reverse type (walking right with military standard) was struck only once in Domitian coinage, when he gained the title GERMANICVS.
There are three undertypes with different obverse legends, going from scarce to very rare.
I managed to complete the series and I'm happy to share it here.
Kind regards

Hello everyone
When I wrote this a few time ago (post #205) I was wrong, because I was still missing one coin.
But here it is: the very first issue, RIC 211 with its obverse legend referring - for the last time - to the deified Vespasian.
I love it!

Hello everyone.
Today I've received these two Domitian coins.
The first one is a IOVI VICTORI sestertius, a very common type, mostly for coins struck in the last years of reign. This is earler issue (second issue of year 85) and is scarce. Hard to photograph because of the rough metal, nicer in hand.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-115653
The second one is an early PONT denarius of year 81. This very rare issue was misclassified by the auction house and probably overlooked.

Hello everyone,
just arrived today this lovely silver piece (short flan, very thick) showing early double portrait of Vespasian and his elder son.
It does a nice pair with my RPC 1942 which has Vespasian left portrait.

Hello everyone,
in the early years of Domitian reign the Minerva types were largely struck on bronze. Later the series continued on precious metals only.
In omitin coinage left portrait are usually much scarcer the the right ones.
Strangely enough, in this 82 issue the left portrait is more common (C2 vs C); I was missing it until today, though.
These dupondii are among the heaviest and thickest of my collection.

Hello everyone.
The new year starts with an ancient forgery of a Domitian denarius.
This coin combines an obverse of year 84 (legend end with GERMANIC and shows aegis), while the reverse belongs to the second issue of year 87.
I rarely buy fourree, but this time I couldn't resist.

Hello everyone,
today I've received this interesting Syrian tetradrachm belonging to the 6th group, the same of the rare issues in the name of Titus. These coins show a club in reverse left field.
The actual location of the mint is uncertain; Prieur suggested Tyre, while the editors of RPC II incline to a Judaean environment on the grounds of the connection with a group of aurei.

Fortuna is the commonest reverse among Domitian middle bronze, yet some issue is quite scarce.

Hello everyone.
As a devoted of the Domitian coinage (the core of my collection, nowadays over 40% of R.I.C. list), I've been happy to spot this first issue of the FIDES reverse. This is a favorite of mine among allegoric subjects.
Coins struck in 84 A.D. (COS X) are generally harder to find than earlier or later issues.

Hello everyone,
no coin can give me as much excitement as a new sestertius, and this is a great time for Flavian collectors since many large bronzes have been presented in the Fall auctions.
The first arrival is a IOVI VICTORI of 86 A.D.; the type is common, but not every issue is.
RIC 2 rates it common (C2), but I don't think it is: just try to find one on the market; there's only one example in the ACSearch db.
In hand the coin is very pleasant, especially the obverse showing a great portrait of my favorite emperor.

Hello everyone.
This lovely coin is my first purchase of the new year.
This Mars reverse type was used by Vitellius on sestertii and carried over by Vespasian on sestertii too.
Domitian used during three years (85-87) on middle bronzes (Dupondius and As).
RIC lists 13 varieties of this type, so far I own 8.
I believe that this issue is much rarer than stated by RIC. indeed the coin is missing in the BM collection, in RIC first edition, and there is no example available in the usual online resources.

Were the Mars dies carried over from Vitellius, or just the type?
According to Kray studies, mentioned in RIC last edition, five reverse dies are known in combination with this obverse. It is known that Vitellius dies were actually reused on occasion, but I would not know whether this should be the case of my coin.

I've just added to my collection the 9th issue of this reverse type (out of 13) and one of the rarest, the 3rd struck in 85 A.D., showing for the first time CENS PER (censor perpetuus) on the obverse legend.
Missing in London and Paris collections, only one example available on line, from different dies.
Kind regards

Hello everyone,
today I've happily received two significant additions to my collection.
The Titus sestertius has an impressive reverse, with the Caesar himself riding again a fallen enemy; perhaps a remainder of his triumph against the Jews.
The Domitian denarius belongs to a short issue, struck in the early months of his brother reign, before the deification of Vespasian. The same reverse (but with COS VI not VII) was struck only at the end of Vespasian reign.
Kind regards

Hello everyone,
I hardly remember a time with so many sestertii added to my collection.
The last arrival is a piece of Vespasian with an unusual version of Pax seated.
The coin is really great in hand; unfortunately it has the sort of patina that don't receive justice in pictures, untouched.
Kind regards

Hello everyone,
today I've received my Easter coin.
It's a pretty rare middle bronze of Domitian as Caesar under Vespasian.
The actual denomination is indeed uncertain: the draped bust would mean dupondius, yet the Spes reverse is typical for an As.
RIC V 837 is doubtfully classified as an As, on the grounds of the reverse type and the light weight of the Paris example (9.48 g).
My new coin - apparently from the same pair of dies - is heavier and the little bit of metal showing through on the reverse (8h, hard to detect on the picture) is yellow rather than red. So, who knows?
Happy Easter to all the Forum members.

Hello everyone,
I'm always happy in receiving new coins, but new sestertii are something special for me.
This is the very first issue of the reverse depicting Domitian in the act of subitting the river-god Rhenus, as a symbol of his victories against German tribes.
I love it and I'm glad to share it.
Kind regards
Alberto

P.S.I'm always been fascinated by river-gods; here is an artistic inkwell from Tuscany (18th-19th century) that I have at home.

Great coin!
I have one of these as well but they appear to be pretty scarce. You don't see these come up for sale too often..
-
Thanks Jay.
Indeed this reverse type was struck only between 85 and 636 A.D..
R.I.C. lists 6 issues, I have three in my collection.

Hello everyone,
just like another example I've posted last week (RIC V 837), this is an intriguing coin, since it combines a bust draped obverse (which would imply a dupondius) with a Spes reverse (usually identifying an as). In RIC it is listed as an as.
The coin is missing in London and Paris collections; RIC cites examples in Madrid and Ljubljana, not pictured though.
Here is a chance to see how it looks like.

Hello again,
this one's been delivered just before lunch.
I've decided to post it here, being another scarce middle bronze, which is missed by both London and Paris collections.
It has an expressive portrait of Domitian, typical of this period.

Hello everyone,
today I received one of my last purchases, a denarius struck in the early months of Titu reign, before the deification of Vespasian.
The coin has sharp details, mostly on obverse, and a plesant golden tone.
Within the occasion a I take a new shot of the same coin struck the previous year under Vespasian, the only among them being the number of consulship (VII vs VI).
This coin too is particularly well preserved, with an even sharper reverse.

Hello everyone,
I've been very happy in getting this coin, as it belongs to a most rare and fascinating series.
Indeed these oricalchum coins, whose actual denomination remains unknown, are believed to be struck by the same Asian mint of the so called "o" mint denarii.
Their style is truly impressive.
There is only another example available online, from the collection of the late Harry Sneh.

Hello everyone.
This coin belongs to a very short series issued by Titus in the name of his deified father.
The obverse seems die-linked with the examples in London, Paris and Oxford.
It comes, with the original ticket, from a collection formed one century ago, the previous owner being a british soldier who died in the field of France during WWI. This is the second coin I've got from the same provenance.

I've been lucky to get the second known example of this rare dupondius of Titus as Caesar.

I'm please to share these two Domitian AE rarities.
The Sestertius is the second example of a so far unpublished type; I don't often buy multiple specimens of the same coin, but in this case I made an exception since I liked the coin and the price was good. Same obverse die as my other RIC 106A and as my 98A.

Hello everyone,
today I've received a few more coins.
Starting with a rare Domitian denarius of 85 A.D.: I already owned an example, yet the reverse was outcentered, missing a part of the legend. This is a better specimen, which shares the same obverse die with the other.
Next is a Titus setertius from Lugdunum: while middle bronzes of that mint are commonly found, sestertii are quite scarce; actually this is the first one added to my collection. The coin is worn and missing patina; it shows the typical bold portrait, though.

Hello everyone.
Today I'm adding to scarce AE Provincials, one Vespasian and one Domitian.
Both shows unpublished legend varants on obverse and will be most likely published in the next RPC Supplement.
The Domitian completes my Flaviopolis series (6 coins of various denominations) and is probably one of the finest examples known so far.
The mint of the Vespasian is still undefined, having been previously attributed to Antiochia ad Orontem, Cyprus, Caesarea and Tyre.

Hello everyone,
here is some new addition to my gallery.
First is a very rare Titus portratt left denarius, missing in both major museum collections
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-131118
Second is a scarce sestertius of Titus as Caesar under Vespasian with a pleasant portrait.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-131119
Third is a very rare provincial AE of Vespasian from Aegae (Aeolis), possibly the second known. The first known example, from the late Harry Sneh collection, was mistakenly reported two times in the RPC II S3 Supplement as 967A and 969A; the correct reference is 967A as confirmed by Michel Amandry.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-131120
Last is a provincial AE of Domitian from the Agrippa coinage in Judea; it's interesting because the altar reverse type is shared with contemporary Rome issues.

Hello everyone.
Near the Macedonian city of Philippi was fought the final battle between the armies of the heirs of Julius Caesar (Octavian, Anthony) and his enemies and killers (Brutus, Cassius, Pompey).
Some years later Augustus founded there a colony of veterans, which in imperial times minted coins with legends in Latin.
The typical reverse of these coins depicts the side by side statues of Julius Caesar and Augustus saluting.
This issue of Domitian was discovered only recently, and published in last year's RPC Supplement 3.
My new coins represents only the second - and best - known example.
Kind regards

Then I've been very happy to gain two Alexandria specimens from the famous Dattari collection:
- one of them is unpublished on RPC II and apparently unique

Hello everyone,
I keep filling holes in my Domitian collection.
Today I received two middle bronzes dated 86 and 87 A.D..
The first one, with a Victory reverse on a small flan, has been harshly cleaned, yet has still good reliefs and a pleasant reverse.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-132919
The second one, with Fides, is in much better condition, with nice details on a large and heavy flan.

Hello everyone.
The titles combination TRP VIII IMP XXI COS XIIII on Domitian denarii is pretty rare, having been struck only for a short period.
Nonetheless, as sometimes happens in collecting, I've been lucky to get to examples (Minerva m2 and m3 type) during last month.
Today I received RIC 676 (m3 type).
I'm looking forward to complete the series with an m1 type.

Hello everyone.
Today I receved this As belonging to the first issue with the Iupier reverse.
Its scarcity is due to the full reverse legend IOVI CONSERVATORI, while it is commonly shortened as IOVI CONSERVAT (and sometimes CONSERV).

Hello everyone,
in a recent auction I've been lucky to get an extremely rare sestertius struck in the name of Titus in year 76 A.D., reigning Vespasian.
The coin is worn, as is the only other example previously known, which is in the Oxford collection. They seem to share the same dies.
Moreover the obverse die is the same as my example of RIC V 905 (Pax standing).
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-133132
In the meantine I received another Titus sestertius, this one was struck during his short reign.
The reverse is severely corroded, while the portrait is impressive, with a fine style portrait on a huge flan.

Hello everyone.
It looks like in 73 A.D. the use of reverse normally meant for asses on dupondii was occasionally practiced.
Indeed, after the Pax standing RIC 584 (I have one too in my collection), another unusual dupondius has surfaced.
The reverse in this coin is Aequitas standing, a subject normally seen on asses (I only have in mind some example with Domitian draped bust, which is usually associated with dupondii)
The metal is clearly orichalcum.
I can't say whether it was done intentionally or by mistake; an interesting coin in any case.

Hello everyone,
I was very pleased to get a rare variant of the Domitian As with Iupiter on reverse struck in 86 A.D.; on reverse it has the shortened legend CONSERV instead of CONSERVAT or CONSERVATORI.
Only with the coin in hand I noticed that the obverse legend has the shorter GEM instead of GERM. The authors of RIC knew only three examples from this die; I don't know whether my coin is one of them or a different specimen.
The coin is missing in major public collections and there is no picture in RIC plates.

It is not too easy to get one ancient coin showing a monument which is still standing after 2000 years.
I've been lucky to get a rare obol of Domitian depicting the mysterious sfinx, already aged over 2000 years when the coin was struck.
The picture of the actual Sfinx of Giza was taken from me in 2011.

The first is a Domitian AE15 from Flavia Philadelphia: I already owned the type but this one is so much better that I couldn't resist:

The second one is an extremely rare Titus AE19 from Claudiconium, possibly the second and best known example. It's a rare issue in Latin from a town that used to struck coins mostly in Greek.

Hello everyone,
it's always a special joy for me to receive a sestertius, which is by far my favorite denomination.
Today I got this huge example of the "river Rhine" type, possibly the most evocative celebration of the victory over German tribes.
It's the fourth in my collection, only two missing so far.
The portrait is of very fine style, the reverse has more wear but is still readable.

Hello everyone.
The first arrivals of the new year are two Domitian rarities.
The first is a sestertius of the greatest rarity, struck only once under Titus. In the last 15 years, I've seen only another example; it was sold in 2004: I was outbidded and I still regret it. The coin itself is in poor condition, due to corrosion and heavy cleaning, yet its devices are still there.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-133820
The second one is a brockage from Philippopolis in Thrace; the seller gave no classification, but I immediately recognized the type. I post for comparison a regular example that is much closer than the one already in my gallery. Thecoin is bilingual: obverse legend in latin and reverse in greek.

Hello everyone.
Yesterday two interesting coins joined my collection; they are both rare issues for common types.
The first one is a IOVI VICTORI sestertius, a type abundantly struck during Domitian reign. This issue of 86 A.D., without aegis, is though to find and is missing in major collections.
Its patina was stripped a long time back and the metal has darkened since then.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-134009
The second one is a FIDEI PVBLICAE As of 88-89 A.D., with a pleasant patina.

That's quite the Flavian collection you have there and most of them are high grade coins. I have a few and mostly low grades. I collect all across the board in the ancient world. The late Romans is where I am collecting reverse types because it's more affordable for me.
Well scored indeed!! Awesome coins!!

Hello everyone,
I've been very lucky to lay my hands over an exceedingly rare small AE coin of Domitian as Caesar under Titus, which was likely struck in a Thracian mint.
It shows an unusual, juvenile portrait of Domitian and is well preserved.

Hello everyone,
today I received two significant Flavian rarities:
1) The Vespasian As with Rome standing on reverse, was known so far for an unique example in the Oxford collection; I've been lucky to get the second known, from the same pair of dies.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-134866
2) Giovanni Dattari, an Italian citizen who lived in Cairo in the early 20th century, is well known for his huge collection of Alexandrian coins, possibly the largest ever built. I'm very glad to add another piece to my collection; indeed the portrait shows clearly an aegis behind the neck, which is not mentioned in RIC, nor in Dattari's original catalogue.

Hello everyone,
as I wrote before, I'm actively increasing the Alexandria side of my collection.
I began to love deeply this series, mostly for the later issues (starting from the 10th reignal year = 90-91 A.D.) when the style was greatly improved, thanks to Roman engravers.

Hello everyone,
this coin belongs to a series whose origin and purpose has been much debated.
In RIC 2.1 these coins were described as struck in Rome for circulation in Syria. Nowadays Ted Buttrey believes that they never circulated in the East and were meant to celebrate a special event, such as the fifth anniversary of Vespasian ascension to the throne.
The coin struck in the name of Domitian is generally scarcer than those struck in the name of his father and brother.
This specimen has somewhat rough surfaces, but far better relieves than my previous example.

Due to a singular coincidence, I received today two coins purchased from different dealers, yet both struck by the same mysterious Asian mint.

Hello everyone.
Today I received two very rare Domitian denarii.
The first one belongs to the misterious "o" mint and is heavily worn. I decided to get in any case, because I think it would be very hard to find a better one, being possibly the rarest type of the series. The difference with the contemporary Rome issue of the same type is self evident, mostly about the portrait. This type represents the very first association between Domitian and the Goddess Minerva.
I took a new shot of my old Rome example in order to allow an easy comparison.

Hello everyone,
I've been very pleased to add two more ex Dattari coins to my collection.
The tetradrachm - known in very few examples - is remarkable for its reverse, depicting the canopic jar of a major Egyptyan deity like Osiris.
The hemidrachm - showing the emperor in the triumphal quadriga - is known only in two examples. Apparently it could be a variant, because there is no aegis; by the way the aegis is not really clear in the other published coin.
Kind regards

Hello everyone,
84 A.D. was a transitional year in Domitian coinage, before the revolution of the following year.
The old types, carried over from the Titus reign, were left behind and new ones were started.
This very rare As shows a bold left portrait, possibly a double die match with the RIC plate coin (xford collection).
Kind regards

Hello everyone.
It had been a while since I did not add to my Jewish area collection.
I've been lucky to get two beauties in once, both with reverses inspired by the coinage of Rome.
The reverse of Domitian RPC 2304 shows an Athena-Minerva M2 (on the capital of a rostral column or as very well argumented by Jimmy Hazelton over a "fercula") next to a trophy.
The reverse of Titus RPC 2313 shows a prisoner next to a trophy, reminding of some denarius.

Hello everyone,
I just received this rare juvenile rare portrait denarius of Domitian.
All Domitian left portrait denarii are very rare including this one.
The coin is worn, yet still enjoyable, mostly the portrait.

Excellent coin Alberto. One of these days I would like to find a left facing Domitian denarius.

Hello everyone.
Imperial coins of Domitia, with the possible exception of cistophori, are extremely hard to get: bronze coins are virtually unavailable on the market, while denarii are sold for thousands.
I've been lucky to find a damaged example (due to crystallization the coin was broken and lost some 25% of its metal), yet with a full portrait and an accettable reverse.
I already had a fourree, but I'm glad to add an official specimen to my collection,
Kind regards

Hi Alberto,
Glad you secured a coin you have sought.
Very fortunate that the break left most of the portrait intact and even Pietas on the reverse!

Hello everyone,
I keep on tryin' to get all Domitian sestertii.
Here's a nice example of a favorite type of mine, struck only in 84-85 A.D..
There are only four issues, and I'm still missing one (it will be very hard to get though).
This one has the regular obverse legend, while I already had a variant with CEN instead of CENS.

Hello everyone.
The last arrival in my collection is an extremely rare denarius from the Secular Games series.
The obverse has left portrait, while the legend reads DOMITIAN instead of DOMIT and is anticlockwise.
This is my favorite Domitian series, so I'm been very happy to get it.

Hello everyone.
After his accession to the imperial throne, Domitian had his late brother deified by the Senatus, and consequently issued a few coins in his honour.
This issue was very short: only one aureus and a couple of sestertii, and all of them are absolute rarities.
I've been finally able to get a sestertius depicting Divus Titus enthroned; the coin is pretty much identical to the one issued by Titus in the name of Vespasian, only much harder to find: Cohen quoted it 30 golden francs.

Hello everyone.
The Annona sestertius with left portrait was my first Titus coin, some 30 years ago.
Eventually I got the right portrait: for unknown reasons many sestertii of Titus are way more common with the left portrait.
Good details and a warm toning make me love this coin.

It's been a while since I last updated my gallery, yet in the meantime I actively worked to expand my collection and I also managed to upgrade the pictures of some older coin.

Hello everyone,
it doesn't happen often to come across Vespasian middle bronzes celebrating his victory in the Jewish war, since they are much more scarcer than sestertii or denarii of the same subject.
This early As from the mint of Rome depicts a scene much alike the one you usually see on denarii.
The coin is worn, but so are even those on London collection.

Hello everyone.
Sestertii with the GERMANIA CAPTA reverse clearly recall in the iconography a typology of the Vespasian's IVDAEA CAPTA issue, except for the presence of a trophy instead of a palm tree.
The issue of 86 A.D. is the fourth in the series, which includes three issued in 85 A.D. and the last two, struck respectively in 87 and 88-89 A.D..
Over the years I had already purchased two specimens of RIC 463, but for various reasons neither of the two satisfied me.
Finally I managed to get a coin that I fell in love with at first sight, in spite of some corrosion, more accentuated in the upper part of the reverse.
It is really a pleasure to handle this huge bronze with its noble Domitian portrait.
I'm pleased to share it here.

Hello everyone.
In this Christmas eve the mailman, acting as Santa Claus, brought me a few coins from a recent auction.
It was a pleasant surprise, as I was expecting the usual delay due to holiday time.

Hello everyone,
This coin has made a long tour of Italy, having been misdirected twice by the postal system! Finally today it arrived at home and is a very pleasant specimen to hold in hand.
It is part of an issue minted by Titus in 80-81 of coins that R.I.C. calls "Dupondius/As" as they are found indifferently both in brass and copper and the distinction is not always easy.
This is not the case since this one is clearly an as (copper), while another specimen I have in my collection is certainly brass.

Style might suggest Thracian mint rather than Rome, cf. RIC 512 pl. 116, only CERES AVGVST type so far attested on Domitian's Thracian asses.
But the Spes type is known on Domitian's Thracian sestertii, RIC 511 pl. 116.

Thank you Curtis for highlighting this possibility that I had not considered before.
In fact, comparing the style of the portrait with my other coins struck in Thrace both under Titus and under Domitian himself (including also T511 and 512 as well as an unpublished sestertius 511A), the similarities seem to me remarkable.
I will certainly submit the coin to the examination of Ian Carradice.

Well, I lost three coins in few months eight or nine years ago: there was a thief (discovered and fired) in the postal hub.
I got refund, in any case those coins was very cheap and not really rare, thankfully.
With the current tracking the system seems pretty secure, at least in my neighborhood.

Hello everyone,
this huge sestertius has just reached its new home.
In spite of two not so small corrosions and some scratches, the coin is very pleasant in hand.

Hello everyone.
I recently came across these two coins, both belonging to the scarce issue of 74 A.D., Vespasian ruling.

Hello everyone.
In Titus coinage left portrait sestertii are often more common than the right ones, for (at least to me) unknown reasons.
This one makes no exception.
It's the first time I add a coin of this reverse type to my collection and I especially love the Tiber patina, giving it a warm and attractive tone.

Hello everyone,
today my friend the postman my postman friend handed me these two coins, which I was eager to receive.
The first one is a sestertius of Titus, indeed a common one, yet I was missing it so far. Titus large bronzes are always stylistically excellent, and this is no exception.
The second is a dupondius struck towards the end of Vespasian reign. It is a substantial improvement on the specimen already in my possession, also enhanced by a very attractive patina. My two coins share the same dies, attesting the rarity of the type.
I wish you'll love them as I do.
