Title: Selecting Albums and Moving to Another Album
Post by: Joe Sermarini on July 19, 2010, 02:23:05 pm
I've just tried to start another album in my gallery, but can't seem to figure out HOW to add to that album.  Also, a coin I meant for the new album was put into another.  How do I move coins from one album to another?  Now that I've posted a lot of coins, I'd to organize them a bit in new albums.  Any help appreciated.

First make sure you are in administration mode. Then click the My coins button from the tool bar. Next to each album there will be a button that says edit pics. Click on that. Now the album title line on each coin should have a drop down menu where you can select the correct album, then at the bottom of the page click save changes. and the coin will be moved. same goes for adding new pics. When you go to upload the album title will default to your original album, but there should be a drop down that will allow you to change it.
Title: Changing Display Order
Post by: Joe Sermarini on July 19, 2010, 02:25:56 pm
How do I change the order of coins in an album?

Coins are listed in alpha-numeric order by the title.  To change the order, you must change the coin titles.

If you want to begin your coin titles with a number (to arrange them by RIC number for example), use preceding spaces to ensure the coins display in numerical order.  If you do not use spaces, 1, 2, 10, 12, 100, would be arranged in the following order 1, 10, 100, 12, 2.  If you enter three spaces before each single-digit number, two spaces before each two-digit number and one space before each three-digit number the coins will display in the desired order.
Title: Replacing Photos
Post by: Joe Sermarini on July 19, 2010, 02:30:46 pm
I have rephotographed many of my coins that are in my gallery and would like to switch out the old pictures with the new ones.  I haven't found a way to do this. Is it possible? I would prefer to not have to rewrite all the info and to also keep the comments.

The software does not include an option to replace photos.  If you want to do a mass replaceplacement, you can mail us a CD and we will upload the new photos.  Each photo must have the same file name as the photo it will replace.
Title: How many photos is too many? Is there a limit?
Post by: Joe Sermarini on July 19, 2010, 02:35:18 pm
Is there a maximum number of coins in a gallery or a maximum number a member can list?

No, we encourage you to upload photos of your entire collection.  More is better!
Title: Is the gallery only for coins purchased from Forum?

Is the gallery only for coins purchased from Forum?

No, the member's gallery is provided for you to share your collection online, regardless of where you bought each coin.  Of course, we hope that in the future you will buy at least some of your coins from Forum Ancient Coins.
Title: How do I request a new Theme Gallery?

How do I request a new Theme Gallery?

Start a new thread in this section of the discussion board with your request.  Please limit suggestions for new theme galleries to those that you will personally support.  What I mean is if you have a dozen or so examples to start the gallery, I will be happy to add a new theme.  But if you just have an idea and don't intend to upload a significant number of photos, please do not ask for the gallery.
Title: How do I correct or delete a coin in a theme (public) gallery?

How do I correct or delete a coin in a theme (public) gallery?

If a coin in the Gallery or Fake Coin Reports needs correction or deletion, please let us know by using the comments feature of the Gallery or Fake Coins Reports.   Please begin your comment with CORRECTION or DELETE and then follow with the details.  It is will be much easier for us to figure out what we should do if we are informed this way.  Thanks.
Title: How can I change the name on gallery pics?
Post by: Joe Sermarini on July 19, 2010, 03:04:12 pm
After a name change is there any way to change the name on all of your individual gallery pics to match?

Unfortunately, no.  The name is set when the coin is first uploaded.
Title: How do I include Greek letters in gallery text?

How do I include Greek letters in gallery text?

It is possible to make Greek letters in Gallery text.  If you type the name of the letter between an ampersand (&) and semi-colon (; ) it will display as the Greek letter.  If you type the first letter of the name uppercase, the uppercase Greek letter will display.  If you type the first letter lowercase, the lowercase Greek letter will display.  Examples follow:

Greek_Gamma       Γ
Greek_Delta       Δ
Greek_epsilon       Ε
Greek_Lambda       Λ
GreeK_Sigma       Σ
Greek_Phi       Φ
Greek_omega_small       ω
Greek_Omega       Ω

If I move my coin to the Best of Type (BOT) gallery and a better coin of the same type gets posted, mine will be deleted.  I don't want to lose my gallery entry.  What should I do?

We don't want you to MOVE your coins from your gallery to BOT.  You should keep a photo of all your coins in your gallery.  If your coins are worthy of any of the theme galleries, please make a duplicate listing for the theme gallery.

Is there a way to search a specific gallery or is the search option as all emcompassing as it seems?

The gallery and fake coin report searches will search a specific gallery if you are in that gallery when you click the search button.  It will only search the entire gallery if you are not already in a gallery when you search.

Maybe I am doing somthing wrong. I go to the BoT gallery, click search, type "julia" and I get results from the entire gallery. I even changed pages in the BoT gallery and did the search bit with the same results.

Ya, you will.  If you look at the bottom by your search bar there are only the options for fakes, and gallery.  So if you are in the fakes board it is clicked on that and will search all the fakes, but if you are in a gallery it searches all galleries, not just the BOT etc.

I suppose I should know this by now, but I'm going to ask anyway...

How do I create a dynamic link to a coin in my gallery from a post?

I know there's a "minus" sign involved but I can't seem to figure the rest out.

Thanks!

Andreas,

OK, let's try this out...

Should be Augustus:

Gallery| Link (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-64694)

EDIT: It works! Or as Dr. Watson once famously said, "How absurdly simple!"

Once again, thank you, Andreas!

I must deduce that you are planning, in the near future I might add, to author a post or reply, upon this distinguished discussion board, related in some fashion, and also illistrated by, a coin in your gallery. Am I correct? ;D

Hi

I have a simple question that has been perplexing me for a while. How do I add my gallery address to my Discussion profile? When I go to edit my Profile there is a "Gallery:" which i can click on that takes me to my Gallery. But I cannot get that address to appear at the bottom when I post a response on the discussion board. Tried cut-and-paste of my gallery address but it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Dave

Hi,

Not a silly question, just things you have to know

When in the gallery, tick "create/order my albums". You see a white board where you can add "new" albums by naming them and order them as you want with the arrows. You've succeeded the first step  :)

Then tick "add a coin" in the bar at the top of your screen. Well, actually you can add up to five at the same time. The "browse" button on the right leads you to the search function on your computer, where you can select the pic you want to add. When it's finished, tick "continue" and follw instructions. At some point it will ask you in which of the albums created above you want to put your image and any comment or explanation or references you would like to add to your image.

You've now gotten a magnificent gallery, congrats

Best
Potator

Hi all,

Is it possible to merge one album into another?

In my Gallery I made a main Trajan album and then a smaller album of Trajan Provincials. I've gone off this setup and was wondering if it is it possible to move the provincial coins into the main Trajan album so they are all together in one place?

If this is not possible I can delete them and re upload them in the main album, but it will take a while and I'll lose comments etc.

Best,
Gareth

Yes. Click on "Edit file information" then, under "Album", click on the arrow to the right of the information box to bring up a drop down menu of your albums together with FORVM dedicated ones. Simply click on the album you wish to move your coin to and then click on the "Apply modifications" box at the bottom of the page. Your coin will be moved to the new location and all the comments etc. will be retained. You will have to do this for each of your provincial coins that you want to move to your main album but, despite my long winded description, it should only take you a couple of seconds per coin.

Are there any guidelines on the size (dimensions) of the picture being uploaded?

I do not know what the upper limit is but it must be quite large, one of the biggest files I've found uploaded by one of our members in the BOT gallery is 1640KB and it seems to have uploaded without any problems. I don't know why it should be necessary to upload files of this size though. The biggest jpeg I have uploaded is about 164KB, but probably the optimum size would be around 80KB. However, where a nice coin is involved, I don't like teeny-weeny dealer's pics that are so small that you can't properly view it.

Thank you.  I can optimize the pictures for the web which will make for a small file size.  My original question was about dimensions: My coin pictures are roughly 600 X 600 pixels, so if I put obverse and reverse together, they will be about 600  X 1200 pixels.  Are these dimensions too large?
Title: Re: Gallery FAQs
Post by: *Alex on November 20, 2012, 11:25:14 am
One of my biggest pictures is approximately 7.18 X 14.81 inches at a resolution of 131 pixels per inch, that is approximately 940 X 1939 pixels. So your pictures of 600 X 1200 pixels should be fine.

I need help in starting a gallery. I can't seem to find complete directions anywhere.  So I tried following the directions given by Potator II above.  I got an album created and a picture uploaded. Now I am at the place where I am suppose to add it to an album.  But under the dropdown menu are listed only the theme galleries -- not the album I created.  Where did I go wrong?  Was I suppose to create my own gallery first before creating an album?  Can you see how the whole process is a bit confusing to someone trying to do this for the first time?  Thanks for any help.

Later: I figured out how to do it.

Sometimes, asking a question is part of the process in solving the problem. You got it perfectly right and your start at uploading pics is great : nice additions there !

PS : step 2 could be to add a link to your gallery in your signature, as many people, including me, do (see below) +++

Hi everyone,

I anticipate creating a gallery soon, and I had a question first. For the purposes of the FORVM members gallery only, am I allowed to use the FORVM's photo that went along with coins that I have purchased from the shop and FORVM auction? The image quality from the shop exceeds what I can create on my own, so I would like to use the FORVM's images (credited of course!) for those purchases. I am in the process of retaking photos from other sellers, but reusing the images from here would certainly save some effort both now and in the future.

Thanks!

Title: Re: Gallery FAQs Sorting Problem
Post by: Schatz on December 28, 2016, 12:22:03 pm
I recently added some more coins to my Parthian gallery. They were all deposited into the 'Early Parthian I' album. When I opened the album to move the coins to their proper places ( I use the Sellwood order ) they would not budge. The following day I was able to move 2 of the 5 coins to their assigned places, but the other 3 resisted all sorting efforts. Not only that, some of the other pieces in the album showed up where they do not belong. The strange thing is that the sorting window shows them in the original order.
I am not aware of any deviation from my usual sorting routine. Any idea what is going on?

Puzzled,
Schatz

Post by: Schatz on December 28, 2016, 06:00:24 pm

Just looked at all my albums: They are all messed up. All Parthian coins were in rising Sellwood numbers. The rulers are grouped in names, but their sequence is incorrect in the within the albums.  Main problem is that I seem to be able to move the coins in the picture manager window but then the changes do not show up in the albums.

Would love to hear if someone has had a similar experience, and what can be done to correct the disorder.

Thanks,
Schatz

As Joe says, there is a way to determine order, but I have a hard time remembering where it is.

Apparently the coins are ordered by the title you give it. So I solved the problem by starting the title of each coin with a numeral. That way I could determine the order of the coins in the album. See for example, my album of British coins:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=4762

Hope this helps.

every time your clear your cache you have to reset your order priority using the blue box in the upper right hand corner. perhaps it's that?

i put all my Taras coins in Vlasto order, but one has to be in the 'Position +' mode to see them that way.
actually i don't know why this isn't the default, but there it is.

Thanks, Joe, Callimachus and Enodia, for your help. I guess I will have to experiment a little. It's probably one small thing I used to do that I am not doing now. Callimachus' number system is good, but it does not make allowances for new acquisitions you would want to fit in. I'll let it sit for a while and try again, perhaps it will work then.

Schatz

I arrange my coins chronologically by date which easily permits new acquisitions to be added in their proper sequence. By using the word "struck" the coins remain in chronological order even within individual reigns.
(See example below).

Could you not do something similar with your Sellwood numbers?

Hi Alex,
I see how your system works, and it would, of course, also work for Parthian coins, but ... I really dread to have to rearrange a couple of hundreds of coins. And there still remains the question why I was able to set up the gallery my way until about 3 weeks ago, and now I am unable to move coins around.
What comes to mind is that I had my Mac professionally debugged recently, and I wonder if something happened in the process.
Well, I guess I have to keep playing around or start editing furiously.
Thanks again,

Quadrans,

if I am correct, your system assigns the first position to the minting date in your album "Roman Republic". This would only work for Parthian tetras as both drachms and bronzes are not dated.  In the following "Twelve Caesars" albums you give all Gajus Julius Caesar coins the 001 position, the Marc Anthony coins the 001a, etc., so you would be able to insert new coins.  Again, the system is not so easily transferable to Parthian coins where the sequence, and even the names of rulers and dates are not established with certainty, in other words, things change.  Orodes I. recently became Mithradates III.,  Vologases III. became Pakoros I., etc., and with the names the time of rule can change.
My old foolproof system was to move the coins around as needed with the sorting feature.  This, for some reason, seems no longer possible.

Thanks, though, for your suggestions.  You certainly have a magnificent gallery!

Hello Joe,

I do believe you when yo say the software has been the same for years. The more I look into this, the more I am convinced that either the recent computer debugging or one of the automatic Apple updates did the damage. My operating system is still Yosemite because I did not dare to download the latest OS. It would have killed my iPhoto app which has all my pics in a certain order. The Photo app which replaces it is does not suit my needs. But my iPhoto has also been messed with, I can no longer upload edited pics from it, rather I have to transfer them first to Photo or edit them in Photo.  Sorry to bother you with all these boring details.  As I said, I'll just have to juggle my coins until they are where I want them.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help and a Happy New Year,
Schatz

Did you try pressing the + or - in the top right corner?

You can also sort your images through the "Sort my pictures" tab.  But you have to go to the very bottom of the page and then "Apply Changes" or else it won't take.

Hi,

I went through all the suggestions and possibilities again, and lo and behold! I think I have everything under control again.  Enodia's suggestion to pay attention to the blue box in the upper right corner did the trick. The only setting there that will permit you to supersede the alphanumeric sequence is 'position'. If one choses 'position +' one can move the coins in one's gallery at will with the help of the sort feature.  I don't know why I did not notice this when I tested the blue box before.  What I think happened is that the Mac repair people and all the Bitdefender scans somehow canceled the old setting.

Three cheers for Enodia!

Hi,

a question concerning the placement of existing listings in the theme galleries:  How do I enter a coin from my gallery in one of the theme galleries without deleting it in its original place? The old 'right-click-copy-and-paste' routine does not work properly (you don't transfer the comments), or do you start a new listing of your coin in the the theme gallery? That would be easy enough to do but then you don't have the number of viewings and the comments.  I figured there must be a clever way to duplicate the listing and place it in a new location.

Always grateful for tech advice,
Schatz

I have a question concerning my gallery. I have uploaded 21 coins. However, my gallery always just shows 4 rows of 4 coins each. Then on the bottom there is a random files row of four of my coins. Usually 2 of the 4 random files are coins already shown above while the remaining two are part of the five coins that aren't shown in the four rows above. How come all my coins aren't showing up? And how do I get rid of the random files row? Thanks!

Click on "Last Added" and you'll see them in order of last added...

I don't think you can get rid of the random line.

I see 16 coins listed in your galleries, so i would do as Jay suggests ans maybe the others got mis-loaded somehow.

Huh, they're all there when I click on Last Added. So what is the purpose of the My Gallery button that only shows 16 coins plus 4 randoms?

Click on your gallery's thumbnail and you will see all the coins you've uploaded.

Everyone has different layouts and I do as well. You only have one folder there in that image that David Atherton posted. Here is how mine looks with a bunch of folders, with the latest additions at the bottom like yours. I find that the latest addition section to be useful so I can remember the last coins I posted.

My gallery that is that image I posted. Just trying to show you an example of a later developed gallery with many folders. Yours only has one folder. You have to make more eventually.

Any way of deleting a single comment left by  on a coin in your gallery?

Someone left a comment that a coin was fake and I wanted to delete it.

I want to connect several entries im my gallery with direct links, e.g. if I have denarii of Faustina with different hairstyles I want to add a link to the other style.

The problem is that if I copy a link in the gallery text it is not recognized as a link. You cannot click it, you have to copy and paste it manually.

Is there a trick to work around this problem ???

EDIT: I found a trick to make it work:

Now I can add a link in the gallery text which can be opened by clicking as usual.

For an example open this gallery entry:

Gallery| Link (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-146701)

All I had to do was to embed the link in a simple html "a" tag (see screenshot below). Everything in brackets is not visible:

Hmm, Interesting, I will try it soon, if it does not cause any conflict  ... +++ ;)

Thanks to the info  :)

No conflict from my perspective, but please don't link to sellers unless it is important. Incoming links increase Google rank. Linking to other sites could raise them above Forum in Google rank.

Hello,

If I've added a coin to the BOT gallery, do I also need to add it to my gallery or has it already been added?

The two galleries are completely separate. You also need to add it to your gallery.

All the information about the coins in my gallery has disappeared from the main screen, though it is available when one clicks the picture. I'm just wondering if this is permanent.

It probably is permanent. We have to make the gallery work on mobile phones to please Google and get good search results rank and to please the increasing number of visitors that use phones.

It was much more fun when the captions were displayed, so that you could read a bit about the coin and then decide if you wanted to click on the picture for a closer look.  Inevitably sometimes contributors wrote descriptions that were long-winded and discursive, but often the captions were very useful, for example, if the description mentioned some minor variation in the legend or privy marks which you would have missed only looking at the thumbnail. I'm sure it's a non-trivial problem, Joe, but I really hope you find a way to restore the captions.

The discussion here is mostly about changes being made to Forvm's software to accomodate mobile phones, I have a small but unrelated request.

Since the software is already being changed and rewritten, how about changing the Login page to have a cursor already in the Username filed so that I do not have to first click on the field to get a cursor there. If there is a cursor already there, I can begin typing immediately. Some websites already have that feature (Google, GMail). I know it is a small thing, but it would sure be nice.

The info in the following link is probably old by now, but perhaps it explains things better than I did above.

Thanks for reading and considering this small website change.

The current gallery is made with Coppermine Photo Gallery 1.4.  The latest CPG version is 1.6.  I hope to upgrade to 1.6 sometime in the coming months but an upgrade is a major chore because our version has been modified. I assume 1.6 will have a like button and social media features.

Since the change in gallery layouts by Forum last year, I note that several coins in my gallery thumbnails have only photos with no titles or text. The information was in the thumbnails when the coins were first uploaded, but failed to come over when the gallery changes were made last year.   The information is there when the thumbnail photo is clicked, but not otherwise.  This makes the gallery look very unevenly presented.  Did I do something inconsistent when uploading these particular coins to cause their titles and descriptions to be cut from the thumbnails?  Wondering how to fix without having to reload the coins. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Carausius,

On the files without text click on Edit File Information. Then click on Apply Changes. That's it.  ;D The file should automatically be reloaded and the information should now appear.

I've done a couple for you but as I am a lazy individual I will leave you do the rest yourself.  ;D ;D ;D

Apologies if there has already been a topic on this but are there any tips on how to take quality photos of coins? I tend to be proud of my landscape photography work but did not expect to struggle with taking photos of coins. Is everyone here investing in expensive macro lenses?

The section that Jay references is great and I recommend reading all the threads there. It certainly helped me. I am a fine art photographer (not a pro, but I know photography). The hardest thing I have ever tried to photograph is coins. LOL. I do not have a macro lens, but I have a macro attachment and a good digital SLR and a proper lighting set up, tripod, etc. I have moved to using my cellphone because the SLR pics suck. Cell phone is way better, but still not up to the standard I want, but the best results I have gotten so far. You can tell in my gallery which pics I took myself versus dealer pics I use when I can. Joe's pics in the shop are always good.

Good luck and share any tricks you come up with.

Virgil

Thanks both for your replies. I will do a deep dive into what was already posted. And yes, it appears that finding the right setup with a phone camera will deliver good results without having to invest in an expensive macro lens. I will try that first.

I read the FAQ but find no answer. I seeone posting about a batch process to change a lot of pictures in one way - but thats not what i need and would ask.

My "problem" was - i only want change one picture.
But i find no workaround.

Is there no way to change the picture of one datafile?
I find no button, no way.

Thanks!

As I understand it, once you upload a picture to the GALLERY, there is no way to later change just the picture.  You must delete the file along with all the text and any comments that are associated with it.

I am certain others, including perhaps Joe, will confirm that.

That was my previous "workaround" for lack of knowledgeable alternatives on my part. Create a new file, copy the details, add a new image to the new record, delete the old record and save the new record.

Stupidly, such a coin appears as "new" although it may have been published months ago. And you lose comments - where there might also be good information about the coin.

Inconvenient, yes, but technically it is a new entry because of the way it currently needs to be done.  The loss of previous comments is somewhat unfortunate.

Perhaps, down the road, a new release of the software used to host the galleries will be modified to allow for replacement of just the image, something that is currently out of FORVM's hands.

I see no need to delete the first record. Add to it a link to new record and thus keep the old comments.

In second record you can put a similar link to old record.
