Title: How do you create the website icon
Post by: Bacchus on December 06, 2007, 07:23:57 am
Hi,

Could anyone tell me the secret of how to create the website icon that you can see if, for example, you save a site to your favourites.  The one that replaces the generic "e" symbol.  Forvm's for example is a tiny version of the logo.

many thanks

MAlcolm

This works in HTML:

To create the icon that appears in the tab and in the address bar of your browser, add this to the head of your html file:

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="misc_pics/wilaac.ico">

Where the HREF should, of course, point to the image that you have prepared, which needs to be a Windows-style icon.  There are plenty of programs that can save an image as an icon.  My own icon is a bit crude, but it works.

You can see this in all the Forum pages (including this one) if you view the source code from your browser.  This is theirs:

<link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://forumancientcoins.com/favicon.ico">

I used relative addressing for my self-contained site; Forum have used absolute addressing for their fixed system.

It should work with no problem.  If you don't have your own icon file yet, you can practice with an existing Windows icon file.

Hi Bill,

I eventually got a couple of minutes to do this.  It works great - It took a bit of fiddling around and some time to kick in but now it is much better than looking at the "e" symbol - though a bit small to tell much detail  :).

thanks again for your help

Malcolm

Great stuff!  Isn't it good to take control of the computer occasionally?
