Title: My Judaean Collection Gallery
Post by: cmcdon0923 on September 09, 2006, 09:36:39 pm
I just uploaded images of my Judean coins into the Gallery.  I need to finish editing the file descriptions to indicate the attribution, but until I finish, if you click on an image the filename equals the Hendin attribution.

I hope you enjoy the coins.

They can be viewed at:  https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=1198 (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=1198)

Sincerely,

Craig

Gorgeous coins; you could make the images more useful by adding the descriptions, Hendin numbers, etc.

I will be adding attributions / descriptions, but I just wanted to get the images up first.

just spent some time admiring cmcdon0923 (Craig I believe)'s magnificent collection of Judeans.  Question: were the coins obtained in the condition that they are now, or were they all from different sources and required extensive cleaning?  There seems to be a uniformity of patina and detail across the collection that I cannot explain to myself.

Post by: cmcdon0923 on September 22, 2006, 07:50:43 pm
Thank you for the kind words regarding the coins.

I personally have done nothing to them after they were purchased.  Most have been purchased from either Ed Waddell (several of the prutah at the same show, which might explain the uniformity of patina), David Hendin, and Herakles.

A few are from other sources.

As for the detail, I usually buy only a single specimen of each variety I need, so I tend to try and buy coins that exhibit above average detail and eye appeal, as money allows.

I just finished uploading images of my newest purchases, made at the Bay State Coin Show a few weeks ago.

The coins added are:  H488, H489, H491, H502, H639, and H640

I need to work on the descriptions after the new year...weights, diameters, descriptions of the elements, etc...

Enjoy.

Craig,
You have a very discriminating eye.  Many of the coins you have in your collection generally come in fine to poor condition and yet you have managed to be patient and find those rare examples that are in higher grades.  They show off very well and you are a good example of how perservance and looking around allows one to build a fine collections.

Very nice and eye appealing coins. I've just wanted to state that some of them (mainly those coming probably from Waddell's sales), seems to me as being heavily processed by "tooling". If this does not bother you, than keep going...
Most of the coins, however, are very nice and seem to be cleaned by "kosher" instruments.

It's been a while since I picked up any new additions for my Judean collection, but last weekend I was in Boston for the Bay State show and managed to pick up a few pieces....a decent Herod Philip (H532) and a few variants of Pontius Pilate (h649 and 650).....mainly engraving errors where various elements are retrograde or even upside down.

I must say that the number of ancients dealers was a bit thinner that past years....CNG and Herakles were noticably absent.  But it allowed me to "spread the wealth" a bit more.

I just picked up a somewhat scarcer prutah of Herod I off of ebay....a Hendin-493.  An image has been added to the gallery (link below).

The owner originally bought is several years ago from Wayne Sayles, and the original flip from that purchase was included with the coin.

What beautiful coins!

One of my areas of historical interest is ancient Palestine, and someday I would like to collect coins from that region.

Your collection is quite excellent and a gives a good idea just how remarkable the coins from that area are.

It's been a while since I've posted here, but I have added a few coins to the gallery in the last few weeks, including the two most recent that arrived just yesterday....a quarter denomination of Herod Antipas (Hendin-511) and an AE18 of Herod Philip (Hendin 542).

Enjoy.

Not at this point.  While I have a handful of earlier types, I don't really concentrate on them.  (But since you mentioned it, perhaps I'll try to get around to shooting them and posing them to the gallery at some point.)

My main interest right now is Biblical coins, focussing on the Herodian and Procurator pieces, up through the end of the first century AD.  I may move into the various "rebellion" coins at some point, as I own a few odds and ends of those too.

I also have a small collection of the Emperors from this same period which can be viewed at:

It's been about five months since I posted to this folder, but I've added a few coins to several of my galleries in this time, especially the Byzantine anonymous folles gallery, and one or two in the Roman Emperors gallery.

For my Judaean collection, I just received my latest addition, a rather scarce prutah of Herod I, designated as Hendin-492.  I just uploaded its image to my Judaean gallery.

All three of my galleries can be found here:   https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/index.php?cat=10623
 (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/index.php?cat=10623)

This coin leaves me needing only one Hendin variety of Herod I, the very rare H-497.  Meshorer mentioned that there were approximately five examples identified when he wrote AJC back in 1982.  I assume several others have surfaced since then, althoutgh MCP only has images listed for two specimens.  Does anyone have a better feel for the current rarity of the H-497 lepton??
Title: Re: New Collection Gallery
Post by: Robert_Brenchley on September 24, 2008, 06:26:46 pm
I can't help with 497, as I don't remember seeing one on sale anywhere, and TJC says nothing about the number of known specimens.

I'm still looking for an 'orthodox' 492, as mine has no trace of a cross either within or without the diadem. Hendin confirmed it as 492, and I'm not arguing! It's not in TJC. 15mm, 1.27g.
Title: Re: New Collection Gallery
Post by: cmcdon0923 on September 24, 2008, 11:16:47 pm
There seems to be some "confusion" regarding what truly constitutes a 492 variety, as your specific coin is pictured on the Menorahcoinproject.com (MCP) website as a 493 (last row of the Obv. #1 coins).

Your coin is certainly stuck well enough and the surfaces clean enough to show the cross/chi, if it was actually there.

I passed on several supposed 492s before buying this one, as many turned out to be either 493 or 494 varieties.  The only way I could feel completely confident was with a coin that clearly showed the cross/chi visible, below the diadem.

It's been a long time since I posted to this thread, although I have added one or two coins to my gallery in the interim.

But I just finished shooting and uploading eight new images of coins I've picked up over the past few months.

The images added are of Hendin varieties:  488, 490a, 498, 499, 501, 638, 649/50v, and 653v

Enjoy !!!

I was just perusing through your gallery of wonderful and beautiful coins. I aspire to create a collection of Judean coins like the one you possess. Slowly but surely, I'll get there. My only problem is I get distracted by all the beautiful Greek and Roman coins out there that are begging me to buy them. You've got a great collection! Keep up the good work!

Just got around to shooting and uploading my most current additions, purchased at the recent Bay State Coin Show in Boston a few weeks ago.

Added, are additional examples of Hendin varieties:  489, 490, 490a, 500, 506, and 507

All of these are "duplicates" of pieces of which I already own examples, but I've decided to do so because I am seriously considering entering a display at the 2010 ANA Midyear Convention to be held in nearby Forth Worth.  By adding duplicates, I can do an "obverse / reverse" display.

Enjoy.....

I've posted lots of additional coins since late 2009.....the last two (H518 and 537) just a short while ago....pieces I just won this morning from CNG's most current e-auction.

I also have a Herodian piece on the way from an overseas dealer.  I'll shoot and upload that one after it arives.

I'm using some time off around the Christmas holiday to finally shoot some purchases I made at the Whitman Coin Show in Baltimore this past November.  I've added a few to my gallery already and hope to get the rest up within the next day or two.

Images to be uploaded include additional examples of the following Hendin varieties:  639, 640, 642, 646, 648, and 476

In addition, I'm probably also going to create a new gallery with coins representing the Seven Churches of Revelation.  I was able to pick up examples of Philadelphia and Laodikea while at the Baltimore show.  I've had a few others lying around for a while that I need to pull out and shoot.

The link to my galleries in in my "signature", below.  Enjoy.

For some reason, I tend to go long stretches without updating my gallery with my new purchases.  I recently went through my box and found about a dozen or so coins I purchased within the last year but never uploaded.

So over the next week or so I'll be uploading a bunch of images, including Herodian and Procutorial pieces, some Mattathias Antigonas and other Hasmonaean pieces, and there are even two tiny Yehud silver pieces I'll be adding.

I hope you enjoy them.

Craig

PS...I just uploaded these three a few minutes ago......

WOW....I had completely forgotten about this thread until I was paging though all the posts a few days ago and came across it.  And I was shocked  :o to see that is has over 12,000 views.  Hopefully at least some of you have found it useful.

In the 3-1/2 years since I last posted, I've uploaded dozens of new images, including three just within the last few days (H-522, 524, and 530).  I still have a small handful to shoot yet and then upload.

I went through my Judaean collection piece by piece and found a total of seven coins that had not been photographed and uploaded to my gallery.  All seven have now been photographed and uploaded.

Now it's on to my Byzantine anonymous folles to do the same.

And then I have several new galleries I want to start for various other series.

I finally added a piece of "hacksilber" to my Judaean Collection.

While they are offered with some regularity most of the pieces offered are European (e.g., Iberian) in nature.  I wanted a piece that was found if not specifically in Israel, then at minimum in the Levant.

Fortunately Joe had one for sale a few weeks ago which met those criteria, and I was able to purchase it.
Title: Re: My Judaean Collection Gallery

After a ”hiatus” of almost two full years from working on my Judean collection to concentrate on other areas I collect, I finally dipped my toes back into the water and added this somewhat scarcer piece of Herod IV Philip.

I had half-heartedly bid on a few coins during that time, but wasn’t overly concerned about whether or not I won them.

I’ve also used the last couple of months of “house arrest” to go through my various collections and take a long hard look at everything to see if they still held my interest, and if not to make the decision to sell them and use those funds to build up those areas I do want to continue collecting.

My most recent addition is a "half denomination" of Agrippa II, struck during the reign of Nero, whose image appears on the obverse.  It was struck between 61 and 68 AD at the mint in Caesarea Panias (aka, Neronias).   The coin weighs 6.43 grams and is 17.5 millimetres in diameter.

Due to some of the changes FORVM was forced to make by the 800 pound gorilla, which changed the way images and their descriptions display, I went through my entire Judaean gallery and changed the descriptions to make identification of the ruler the first thing you see.  The attribution by Hendin number and details like weight, will now only appear when a file is selected for display.

I've also started making this same change to some of my other galleries.

What would be nice to see is if the a second line of the descriptive text could be displayed as opposed to the number of views, which really is irrelevant and probably of interest only to the gallery owner.

I probably should have set up my descriptions differently from the beginning, but as they originally appeared, everything was visible on the initial gallery display.

But with the change FORVM had to make, just showing the attribution information really wasn't helpful to anyone looking at the gallery.

Even though it might not technically be considered a "Judaean" coin, I finally was able to add a Vespasian JUDAEA CAPTA sestertius to my collection.  I'm actually going to keep it with my "1st Century Roman Emperor" collection, but thought I'd post it here since it does have ties to Judaea.

It has a hair less detail than I had originally wanted on an example, but after having been blown out of the water (big time!) twice last month on two other pieces at auction, I figured this was good enough to console me until I can find an example with fuller details.

Very nice Capta.  Congrats!  At least it's not tooled.  I have added similar ones in the last few months, These have always brought a premium but it seems they have gone to another level recently.

Thanks jay.

Yes, it's difficult to find nice original medium grade specimens.  The premium condition coins are bringing serious premiums, which is to be expected.  Unless you have the ability to personally inspect a coin first, in order to get one that has never been messed with, you almost have to accept slightly less that choice surface.

But having acquired this coin creates a slight dilemma.....now I have to find a nice As to go along with it, and then I need specimens from Titus' reign to round out the set.  It never ends !!  (But maybe that's a good thing.)
