Post by: Jochen on September 19, 2019, 03:56:51 pm
Dear Friends of Greek coins!

I can't find a reference for this coin and need help:

Thessaly, Lamia, in the name of the Malienses, c. 400BC
AE 16, 2.47g, 16.41mmx13.58mm, 225°
obv.: [M]ALIE[WN]
Head of young Dionysos with ivy wreath l.
rev.: Philoktetes, in short chiton, and wearing Phrygian bonnet, kneeling r. and holding in extended hands bow
ref.: ???
F+, brown patina, oval flan

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance
Jochen

I'm not sure about Dionysos. On the Lamia coins Dionysos is mostly depicted with long, floating hair, and IMHO there are also no visible ivy leaves. Also the legend is not so obvious.
Therefore I would not exclude the nymph Lamia, although I only find examples with head right.

Your coin seems to be from Alaisa in Sicily:
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=5231384
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1937063
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=159324

So it is Artemis or Sikelia and Apollo or someone else instead of a Nymph and Philoktetes  :).

Some addition: An article about the coinage of Alaisa Archonidea can be found in Alberto Campana, "CNAI - SICILIA: ALAISA ARCHONIDEA (343 a.C. - 7 d.C.)",  Panorama Numismatico 1996:
https://www.academia.edu/26923102/CNAI_-_SICILIA_ALAISA_ARCHONIDEA_343_a.C._-_7_d.C._

The coin here is described as number 12 on page 91.
