Valentinian Help Please
« on: August 17, 2012, 03:49:45 am »
I am trying to determine the mint of this little jewel. Obverse: PDC, D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG Reverse: SALVS REIPVBLICAE. 13mm and 1 gram. The mint mark is not clear. Very clear Chi- Rho over epsilon on left. Sear 4167 type. I have RIC but can’t find a match. Your help is appreciated. Thanks-

Just now looped it again and ASIS- does not look like it fits but a ANTA could. What about the chi-rho over epsalon?

Pendrakon,

I am assuming you meant Valentinian II as this type wasn't minted for Valentinian I.

Also, I don't think the :Tao-Rho: field mark was issued at the Siscia mint.

I can't find any reference to  :Greek_epsilon: as a known field mark. Is it possible that what you are perceiving to be an  :Greek_epsilon: is actually Victory's foot?

Regards,

-Kurt

Quadrans,

I respectfully would have to disagree. The obverse legend would be incorrect. Also, Valentinian III bronze coins exhibit extremely crude designs.

Could the epsilon actuall be a foot? Looks a bit large and high- but maybe. Let me see if I can post a higher resolution scan. Thanks-

I enjoy these late Roman mystery AE4s. I have about 50 of these that I revisit every now and then when I am bored. Before I close out this one does anyone have a good reverse showing a Chi-rho over P, Q, S, T or epsilon that they could post a scan of? Thanks for your help guys-

Pendrakon,

I don't have RIC IX and can't find a single online reference for this type being minted with any left field marking other than a plain  :Tao-Rho:

Does your RIC IX list any left field markings for Valentinian II other than a single  :Tao-Rho:??

RIC IX does not have any SALVS types for Valentininian II with a Chi-Rho in the left field and a letter under it.

I think the epsilon is really Victory's dress billowing out at the bottom.
I've posted a picture of 3 coins which show Victory's dress like this: two antoniniani of Gordian III (one from Rome, one from Antioch) and an AE2 of Decentius.

Victor, thanks for confirming the RIC listings.

Callimachus, I would have to agree with you. Thanks for posting those examples.

Cheers,

This is what an AE4 of Valentinian III typically looks like...
Very crude, as Kurt stated.
Yours looks more like Valentinian II.
