What is a Potin?

Thanks everyone for the clarifications. I have so often seen coins described as "potin" or "cast potin" I thought it had nothing to do with material. Billon coins are usually described as BI or "Billon" and then the size, same as AR and AE. Potins are described differently. I have always had the wrong impression.
