Where are you from?
« on: June 08, 2010, 08:46:28 am »
Hello.
I am a Korean (South).
In South Korea, There are only under 10 people who collect ancient western coins.
(I know 2 of them.)

So, I get almost information about roman coins from here.
(Thanks a lot everyone!)

Where are you from?
There are many people who have same hobby with you?

My latest coin
Postumus Antoninianus.

It's nice to see another collector in Asia. I live in Thailand. I may be the only ancient coin collector in Southeast Asia. (The only one I know of.)

I think most of the members here will tell you that they know of very few or no other people that collect ancients in their area. I kinda like it that way. It keeps the hobby "special."

I am from the NW of England - I have no local coin shops and my local museums have some of the best coins collections in the world not on display; after speaking with them they have over 27,000 not on display and less than 30 on display.  So I am here for my fix  ;)

I'm from Orange County,New York,I know and purchased my modern coins from the only 2 coins shops withing 70 miles.
But they don't deal with ancients and I don't know anyone who collects,no clubs either,
even the bookstores don't carry a generic ancient coin book,I buy everything online from V Coin.
I am truly an island unto myself :'(

I live near Warwick in the horribly named West Midlands in England.

There is an antiques emporoium in Warwick and a guy sells coins, milled & hammered English Gold & silver probably bronze plus Roman and a few Greeks mainly silver.

I bought my first denerii & Antoninius from him and my Mithradates V1 Eupator tetradrachm.

There are dealers in Birmingham and Stratford upon Shakespeare and an auction house in Warwick called Warwick & Warwick.

Never been to any.

I have mainly moved from Roman to Greek & Hellenistic tets.

I wonder if someone listed Spain, Greece, Italy, Syria, Turkey, Tunisia, Egypt, UK, Croatia, France might we say "never travelled, just born, raised and stayed in the Roman Empire the whole time with the odd bit of military service".

my record:

Netherlands 8 years
Gabon 2 years
Ireland 20 years
Oman 5 years
United Kingdom 6 years
Nigeria 5 years

I'm not really sure where I'm from. There's a wide variety of skin-shades, nationalities and languages around my kitchen tables. We are all confused bunnies. Roman coins have long appealed to me as being a portable hobby, as distinct say from topiary which is usually location-dependent.

I'm from Wakefield in West Yorkshire. You may have heard of it, apparently it's famous for rhubarb of all things and quite shockingly Black Lace of Agadoo fame  :-[.

Simmurry whereabouts in the north east are you? There are two decent dealers of ancients in York, one of whom is part of Spink. The guy who used to run it was into early milled coins and didn't know much about ancients, which is why I ended up picking up some rare types for peanuts! Unfortunatly he isn't there anymore so I haven't had any really good deals from there for a while, not to say it's not cheap though still, because it is!

I was born and raised in Fleetwood, Lancs., and yes, I do like Fleetwood Mac! Spent 10 years in Malta with brief stints in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi. Studied in Scotland.

My career will take me back to Abu Dhabi soon, as it did with my father, but I envision a nice little house in Turkey and a plot of fertile land in Malta. The Med is all I want.

i'm not as well travelled as some of the members here, but i guess i've been around a bit.

i'm originally from Wallasey in Cheshire (Merseyside), not far from Will in fact.
from there i immigrated to Vancouver Canada, and eventually to San Francisco (The City!).
i moved steadily up the California coast, meeting my wife in Santa Rosa (wine country!) from where we moved to Salem Oregon, our current address.
we both love it here, and spend our weekends exploring the magnificently beautiful countryside. if you go to a waterfall, lighthouse or covered bridge in Oregon you will likely find us there!

... and yes, I do like Fleetwood Mac!
oh yes, especially the earlier blues incarnation... Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac!

Born in new Hampshire, raised on the gulf coast of Alabama, and now live in Atlanta Georgia. I know of one other close by and he deals with high end ancient coins only. More of a collector but he will sell too.
