Lead Hendin 1360 comments please
« on: March 08, 2012, 11:15:34 am »
I would value your observations on this prutah Hendin 1360  It would appear to be made of lead or heavy alloy.  I recall some lead prutah being John Hyrcanus II to provide alms for the poor.  Obviously this coin would be considerably younger. The edge looks a little suspect.
5.5gr  18.0-18.8mm  2.6mm thick  axis 5hr
Thanks

Why lead??
this is first Jewish war Prutah of bronze, the incrustation and look is of bronze metal not lead??
I think it is just Acid treated .
the lead coins are of Alexander Janaeus, not of Hyrcanus.
warm regards.

It is the weight 5.5gr and the colour.  Being nearly twice the expected weight, I assumed it was lead.  Would there be a problem with an AE being this heavy?
Thanks Salem

Check the weight again, it is indeed heavy for a prutah.
this coin is kind of double strike or over struck, it could be double flans a cast of two coins as well, the edge look that the theory of a cast of two coins is most likely what we see, which is for some collectors in high demand, and that is not common .
regards.

another theory is to be over stuck on Mattathias Antigonus coin, the flan look like the Mattathias indeed, and this support the theory of cast of two coins :)
very nice find .

I have checked the weight at 5.5gr.  I have a 'normal' AE H1360 at 2.7gr 16.4mm and 2.0mm thick.
I was a bit concerned that the edge was suspect on the lead one.

I think the first coin is a modern cast replica

The theory of over struck on Mattathias Antigonus is most likely, there is an example on the quarter bronze shekel from the Jewish war, and the Prutah type did has so many barbaric issues as well, I make the coin brighter and looked at the surface closer n the photo, I dont see from the photo modern casting tracks, the flan is indeed judaean style, the over all style looks fine except a die shift on the left of the leave , the red iron oxidation between the letters show a hard Acid cleaning, the edges show a casting method that was used in Mattathias coinage, all these are supporting an ancient coin, but still when doubts are around a coin it will be for sure better to examin in hand carefully.
regards.

I apologize posting in an old thread, but I have the same lead prutah... Exactly like it, except mine is 3/10 of a gram heavier. Mine is a carbon copy with the exact same off-center details, indentations and "wear" areas. I have three other coins from the same eBay vendor that are obvious fakes, also. Two widow's mites and an "unresearched" Roman coin that could be a Caracalla or Geta fantasy. As soon as I can I'll post photos.

That fits, since the coin in this thread does indeed look like a modern cast.
