Vespasian - Victoria Navalis variant
« on: May 03, 2008, 09:58:42 am »
Vespasian, Rome mint, 71 AD.,
Æ As (26-27 mm / 10,18 g),
Obv.: IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG [COS III] , laureate head of Vespasian right.
Rev.: VICTORIA - [NAV]ALIS / S - C (on both sides of the prow) , Victory standing right on prow, holding wreath and palm.
RIC II (old) 503 (?)

I read on this forum :
new RIC II shows different catalog numbers for the position of the S C on the reverse.

"The tables say that the old 503 corresponds to 335-8 in the new edition.  335-6 appears to be you coin (head right is 5 & 6, head left 7 & [Cool] .  The difference between 5 & 6 is where the SC is: 335 (SC in field), 336 (SC in exergue)."

But my coin shows the S C on both sides of the prow.
So far didn´t find a similar coin in online resources, ... .
All coins depicted show these two letters either in the fields above the prow or in the exergue below.
Is there a similar type in new RIC II ?

regards

The new RIC II does not have a separate number for the S C on either side of the prow, a note for 336 states some examples do indeed occur.

Here's another. How would you reference it in the new RIC?

To complete the family on this issues:

Titus as Caesar under Vespasian, Rome mint, 72 AD.,
Æ As (25-26 mm / 10,83 g),
Obv.: T CAES VESPAS IMP P TR P COS II , laureate head of Titus right.
Rev.: VICTORIA - [NA]VALIS / S - C , Victory standing right on prow, holding wreath and palm.
RIC II (old), 88, 627 ; Coh. 387 ; BMC - ; CBN 637 .

Maybe someone can update to the new RIC number.

Regards
