Help - confirmation of Maues AE unit identification
« on: April 18, 2020, 04:28:29 pm »
This was purchased as an Indo-Scythian coin from Maues.

The tag says MACW 2055 but I don't have that volume of Mitchiner.

I see a reference in my old copy of De Morgan's Manuel de Numsimatique Orientale (page 374) to a square AE of Maues (Moa) with obverse "Dr. Cavalier" - which I interpret as Draped horseman - and reverse Victory.  Seems like this coin but hard to say without an image.

Strangely I can't find an image of the coin anywhere - Forum, Wildwinds, zeno, etc.

Can anyone confirm this is indeed a Maues coin and provide any more reference?

MACW 2205, definitely Maues, you can just about see 'MAYOY' at the bottom right of the obverse. Senior 16.1 (ISCH Vol II)

Nice coin!

Thank you very much for the ID.  Senior looks like a great resource.

So is this coin rare?  I could find many images of the other Maues coins like Senior 15.2, and several examples for sale, but not of 16.1.

Scarcer than other Maues types but I wouldn't say it was that rare. Often poorly preserved and over-looked as an issue of Azes! It's not as distinctive as other Maues designs.

Is the monogram for Maues or the Dynasty?
