Cleaning black spots/deposit off of a bronze fragment
« on: November 18, 2023, 10:03:43 am »
Hello! I need your advice - how would I go about cleaning the black spots/deposits off of a bronze fragment? I want to be very careful for obvious reasons, and normally I would probably leave these spots on the item. However, this fragment is from a larger tabula and may contain text underneath the deposits. I do not want to use chemicals and may opt to use a mild 320 grit dremel brush to test one part of the surface. Thoughts? Thank you for your help!

Have you tested to see how hard they are?  Fingernail, toothpick, bamboo skewers, etc. up the chain of hardness?

If they are rock hard then your only option really is to try to remove or shave away with a scalpel or something.  Which you may not want to try.
