Maurice Tiberius fantasy 40n?
« on: March 16, 2008, 07:28:41 pm »
This one has a hard black patina and looks old to me, but it's so strange that I wonder if it's some kind of recently-struck fantasy item.

It's based on S.533, the Maurice Tiberius 40 nummia of Antioch, year 15, officina delta (an officina that actually wasn't used that year?).  The head has been reduced to a perfectly circular blob, perched on a columnar neck and topped by an inverted-U of hair.  There are traces of his shoulder to the left and traces of his name, RICI, at 1-2 o'clock.  Maximum diameter is 29 mm and weight is 7.75 grams.  Any ideas, anyone?  Thanks!

I agree it does look odd. I have a fantasy piece with a very similar looking flan, but the weight is 15.98 gms

Thanks, wileyc.  As I look at it some more, I'm beginning to think it's a remarkably incompetent contemporary imitation, perhaps done by the Avars.  It's the strangest one I've ever seen.
