Reference for Greek AE
« on: March 24, 2023, 09:01:26 am »
AE 17mm.  4.30g.

Obv: Laureate head of Apollo right.
Rev: Pegasos springing right, below ( tunny fish?)  and magistrate  :Greek_Tau: :Greek_Iota: :GreeK_Sigma::Greek_Tau: :Greek_epsilon:
       :Greek_Upsilon:or  :Greek_Rho:  :Greek_epsilon:or :GreeK_Sigma:?

Is there any specimen of this Alabanda coin listed with this symbol and magistrate?

Thank you in advance for your help and time.

magistrate?

ISEGRIMM lists a magistrate "ΑΡΙΣΤΕΥΣ" but only for a silver coin.  :-\

Unknown magistrates can be so frustrating!

I looked over the Alabanda types in HNO (Historia Numorum Online: http://hno.huma-num.fr/search). (Had you tried that already? I love HNO for Carian coinage.) Nothing jumped out as a perfect match, but...

I noticed one monogram that could potentially be consistent (if I'm understanding your mag.'s name correctly). It's on an AR Tetradrachm of Apollo/Pegasos, c. 200-195 BCE -- but I think HNO gives roughly contemporaneous dates for the tetradrachms and your type (c. 200-190 BCE ?):  http://hno.huma-num.fr/browse?idType=244 (HNO 244, Specimen 4 [plate coin]).

Monogram looks like it's formed of

 :Greek_Tau: :GreeK_Sigma:

but it could even be:

:Greek_Tau: :Greek_Iota: :GreeK_Sigma:

(Are those the first letters on yours?)

In most cases it looks like HNO gave a new "type" for each different magistrate name -- but not always. E.g., HNO 1543 [http://hno.huma-num.fr/browse?idType=1543] is an Apollo / Pegasos bronze; some specimens have monograms, at least one spells out the name fully. [http://hno.huma-num.fr/browse?idType=1543] So, even if the "plate coin" in search results isn't your name, it may be worth checking "All specimen images."

The Berlin collection has a bronze coin with ΑΡΙΣΤΕΥΣ as magistrate and also the quiver beneath the Pegasos  :): https://ikmk.smb.museum/object?lang=de&id=18287612&view=rs

Many thanks Ralf, Curtis and Altamura for your detailed help.

I think this coin is the same as the coin registered in the Berlin collection.
