I've been Lipanoffed!
« on: March 27, 2019, 12:34:08 pm »
I've had this coin for about a year and a half in my collection.  Today, it was pointed out as a Lipanoff fake by David Atherton.  There are actually several in the fake reports.  This one is pretty deceptive until you find the matches.  it's also struck not cast.  Just goes to show, even common coins are faked.  I'm actually not upset.  I now have a struck Lipanoff in my collection and it wasn't very expensive.

Would you be able to pick this out as a fake without knowing there were matches?  Thanks to David and also Forum for keeping the fake reports!

Fake report:

My coin:

Laureate head right

COS VII DES VIII P P
Seat draped, above winged thunderbolt

Rome, September 13- December 31, 81 AD

I'll add a new fake coin report

The fields do look a little flat and lifeless.

I am not sure what you should expect with fields, Molinari.
Maybe--- "The fields are alive with the sound of music!"
oh, wait a minute, that is hills....  my bad. <grin>

It is a fairly handsome coin, for a fake.

This is a fairly common coin for Domitian so I didn't even think to look in the fake reports.  I agree about the fields but it is convincing, especially in hand.

Although fake coins sour the market... And I'm completely apposed to them...
It's kinda cool to get a genuine fake from a master fake engraver of counterfeit dies.
I wonder if in 2009 years, modern fakes will be considered in the same category as we concider ancient imitations now?

Keep it in your black library... It remains an attractive chunk of metal!!

I always hate to be the bearer of bad news regarding this sort of thing, but it's the only way to weed out these impure coins.

And Jay was quite gracious accepting the bad news, which isn't something you normally experience when you tell someone they have a forgery. Thanks Jay for being understanding.

David this was an open and shut case.  No reason for me to get upset, I'm thankful!   Joe has provided a fantastic resource here and I'm grateful to have so many eyes on my coins.  It just goes to show how valuable the galleries and Fake reports are.

It is abnormally perfectly round and centered. Of course that is not condemning, but should spark enough suspicion to look at the fake coin reports. Also the die wear is abnormal. I can't say what is abnormal about it but it just looks different from what I expect.

Can you still get a refund or was it an eBay purchase?

Of course you're right Joe.  I thought I "knew the coin" but obviously not!  ;D

Nathan, I think too much time has passed.  Yes it was an Ebay purchase
