Request for Help
« on: May 07, 2016, 06:26:13 am »
Hello,
Bought as an 'unidentified ancient coin'  this 4.1g, AE19 appears to be of a very young Marcus Aurelius as Caesar and the remains of the obv. legend look like, .....OV(H?) - POCKAI.   The reverse has a facing cult figure of Artemis common to many types and the fragments of a legend that appears to be:.....ICE - N :Greek_Omega:N.   Any help or direction would be appreciated.  Thanks,

Unfortunately, the coin is not pictured, but this listing certainly seems close to yours.

Dear Cassius, Kurt, & Board,

Here is an image for the second specimen of RPC IV Online 1142 (temporary):

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=92256

Kurt nailed the city, but the emperor on Cassius's coin is actually Lucius Verus.  The obverse happens to be a die match to the Munich specimen listed under RPC IV Online 1140 (temporary):

RPC Online does not record any other coin types for Lucius Verus of this small denomination

Hope this helps.

Yes, that seems to be it.  I never encountered a coin of Aurelius as Caesar with just the name 'Verus'.  I don't know if there are any issues of Lucius Verus as Caesar.   But it is Aurelius and it is Ephesus, although the reverse legend appears to be (using Xray vision)  :Greek_epsilon: :Greek_Phi: :Greek_Iota:C-N :Greek_Omega:N.  An engravers error?   Thanks everyone.

Dear Cassius and Board,

Since Lucius Verus appears to be laureate, he probably was intended to be shown as an emperor, even though that fact is not reflected in the titulature.

I believe the reverse can be read as/restored to "ƐΦƐСΙΩΝ Β ΝƐ."

In the future, please use a more specific descriptive title. For example, you could have used, "ID Help Please - Marcus Aurelius as Caesar(?) AE19 Provincial."
