I will have to think about this, I'll reply when I've decided.

I'd donate it, to a museum, Smithsonian.

Even if it was certain that the Tiberius / Liva denarius was the actual "tribute penny" of the Biblical account, there would be no way to attribute a specific coin as being THE one that Jesus Christ touched or held in His hand. I actually think this is a good thing so that objects like this stay historically (and religiously) significant, yet do not become religious iconographs or objects of worship, such as so-called "splinters of the cross" sold in antiquity by charlatans out to make a quick denarius from gullible religious pilgrims.

So were you the one who would destroy it? And I can't blame you, you have your a winning argument. But me I still would not destroy it.

Of course there is an infallible way to tell if Jesus touched a coin, or anything else: drop it in my palm, and, if I burst into flame, it was touched.     What a question!  George S.

With my argument, I can't really answer you question at all, so I voted "other." I would never destroy any object of antiquity. In my mind that is an unthinkable act. It's like burning books. Unpardonable.

Same here, of course without a way to prove that he did in fact touch it
you wouldn't get $$$. I would sell any 'tribute penny' I came upon, because they're ugly boring coins
but luckily not everyone has noticed.

While I'd like to think I had the drive to but it in a glass box on display and charge ££££ in to see it (what a never ending cash cow :) ) - I probably just donate it to the BM.

I once have had it in my hand, this very specimen! But then sadly it was mixed up by an ignorant with my other tribute pennies. And now I don't know which of them is the right one. What shall I do now? Any suggestion highly appreciated.

Best regards

Ought not there be a 'JESUS' countermark on it? :)

I used to show people a Tiberius denarius and say, "This is the coin spoken of in the Bible when Jesus said, 'Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and render unto God the things that are God's.'"

I don't show any "tribute penny" coins to people anymore, because I've had the response more than once, "Well, how do you know that this was the very coin Jesus held in his hand?"

Ignorance, I can put up with. Stupidity is intolerable.  ::)

(By the way, Jochen, you must have sold it... because I've got that coin in my collection now.) ;D

Put it in a 2x2 and label it
Tiberius Denarius and give it a RIC number.

What if it wasn't a Tiberius denarius, why should it be?
This is not an opening into this boring 'tribute penny' dicussion but Jesus encountered and touched lots of other coins
in his life.

My point being, what so many others before me said
is that we don't know what coin the tribute penny was
so all we can do it site the coin reference and keep the myth in  mind.

By the way...What were the coins at the money changers table?

Silver shekels, half shekels of Tyre, whcih were the only form of currency accepted at the temple.

Didn't people bring local currency to exchange for coins acceptable for use in the Temple.
I guess I answered my own question. ;D

But this is not about what coin the tribute penny was, Jesus didn't touch a coin for the first time in his life that day.

Did Jesus actually touch THOSE tribute pennies?
He was probably touching Herods coins may be a Hasmonean or two
as well as any Roman or provintial coin that was circulating.

I didn't mean to open up a can of worms about which coin the "tribute penny" was. My point was that when I used to show people an example of that coin and say, this is the tribute penny, the usual response wasn't "Was the Liva denarius of Tiberius the tribute penny, or perhaps another coin?"

no... it was more like, "Wow! Jesus held THIS coin in his hand 2000 years ago? really??" **burp** "In the very hands of Jesus! How do you know He held THIS ONE again?" [scratching head and behind repeatedly]

To that end, I don't even bother anymore. I'm just happy I found this discussion board to chat with other intelligent human beings about intellectually stimulating topics, without the feeling that I need to loan a couple brain cells to illicit a response.

Wait! How do you know Jesus DID touch it, you mean to say that he could have touched it? ???

The description on ebay specifically said Jesus held it, so it must be true!
