Portrait of the day

.. So, I saw this coin which is in most respects a rather ordinary pentassarion, but it has one feature which I think is quite exceptional - the portrait of Tranquillina!  Very individualised, certainly a portrait of someone.  It's a pity it's one of a facing pair and therefore on a small scale.

She doesn't need to look like Angelina Jolie or someone to be a great portrait!  I don't know how strong a jaw the girl had, but I agree that it's a portrait of real character, whatever her facial bones were; and we don't have a lot of portraits, either.  Pat L.

A lovely aquisition moonmoth. The design of the coin has tremendous grace and balance and the portait of the empress is so forceful. When you think of what she was up against, dangerous unstable times, treachery in the ranks and a consort too inexperienced for the job. It is no wonder that worn and encrusted as her portrait is, it still has a sense of sad dignity about it.
